New Live & Post Production Update July 30th

PostWed Jul 29, 2020 2:10 pm

I am excited to see what the new updates are going to be. I have been struggling with developing an 8K workflow with BMD's existing line-up of equipment and I am hoping that tomorrow's announcment will solve some of those issues.

I am hoping that the UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 gets upgraded to the UltraStudio 8K Extreme, or even 12K Extreme is cost effective. That move however kind of puts it in competition with the Hyperdeck Extreme 8K HDR deck, with the exception that one can record internally and the other one cannot. I have said before that the Hyperdeck Extreme 8K HDR deck would be almost perfect if it had a Thunderbolt 3 (or 4) input into it so you could use it like any of the UltraStudio offerings. But then you are also paying $5,000 for an interface.

As to the Live production updates, not sure what's happening there. They just announced the new ATEM panels so I am guessing that the 12K camera will be supported somehow. Unless there is a new ATEM Television Studio Pro 8K panel to go with the 12K camera.

Anyone else have thoughts and needs in these areas?

Well the ATEM Mini Pro ISO is a cool device and one I will be getting however todays live and post production update does not address the major issues with a comprehensive 8K editing workflow.

I was really hoping for something like that today.

Don't hold your breath. Thunderbolt 3 does not have enough bandwidth for baseband 8K 60fps, and Thunderbolt 4 does not improve on that. New enough DisplayPort and HDMI standards support it, but the hardware to actually use those connections is not readily available, and 48G-SDI is definitely not any closer. The real question is, do you actually need 8K monitoring?
