Pull through only the colour values of a LUT

PostSat Aug 01, 2020 2:33 am

If I wanted to pull through only the colour values of a LUT a not the gamma curve, so that I can apply my own curve, how would I go about doing that?

The problem is that unlike L*a*b or YCbCr the RGB color format does not separate color from luminance.

You could try to set up a layer node with the LUT applied to the top node and setting a composite mode to color. But your mileage may vary.

The bottom line is that RGB does not separate color from luminance.

I think you would need to design your own LUT.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Theo of Miesner Media does exactly this, via a powergrade with HSL transforms:

I tested it in ACES, works as described.
