Mini Recorder doesn't put out 1080p

PostTue Jul 21, 2020 6:31 pm

Hello people,

I need your help with the Ultrastudio mini recorder. I can't seem to get a full hd output from my Ultrastudio mini recorder. I've connected my Canon G7x mark iii (which puts out 1920 & 4k clean hdmi) via micro hdmi to hdmi into the mini recorder. Then via thunderbolt into my Macbook Pro. After that I download and open up Desktop Video Setup 11.6. I select hdmi output, no conversion and click save. I also checked the security, but nothing is blocked in my macbook settings.

1. First of all the video input details don't show up in DVS. Is this normal? (see attachment for printscreen)

But okey, guess it must be working. I then open up OBS or Streamlabs and add the Blackmagic source. Most of the times I get a black screen as I also don't know what it puts out, but i'm guessing just the normal 1080p25 I feed it (as there is no conversion). Selecting this format gives me a black screen. The only time I get an image is when i select 625p50... Not what i need.

2. Why does it only put out 625p? Please help me out on this one.

I also tested my cameras signal on my monitor which resulted in great clean 1080 and 4k video.
I also feeded my xbox feed into the Mini Recorder which resulted in a black screen, so no video.

I try to open Blackmagic Media Express which gives me a pop up that 'Blackmagic hardware could not be found in your system'

3. This seems that my Macbook doesn't recognize the Recorder, while it will (occasionally) send out the 625p signal (see attachment for printscreen)

I use a Macbook Pro with macOS Catalina 10.15.3

Could anyone please inform me on what to do?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Anne

Most consumer cameras will output a 1080p50 or 1080p60 video signal over HDMI (when capturing HD video). However, the UltraStudio Mini Recorder does not accept 1080p50 or 1080p60 video signals. It only accepts 1080i50/60 or 1080p25/30.

If the Desktop Video setup utility does not show a detected input resolution and frame rate (and you have a video source connected), this likely means that the input video format is not compatible with the capture device.

Unless there is a way to configure your camera to output 1080i or 720p video, your best bet is probably to get something like the Mini Converter UpDownCross HD to convert the video signal output by your camera into a format that is compatible with the UltraStudio Mini Recorder.

Hello,

Thank you for your quick respons.

Is it possible to use the Black Magic Micro converter to transform the signal into a compatible 1080p25?
This has a hdmi in which converts it into 2 sdi outputs. I'm thinking of then getting one sdi cable to go the the sdi input on the recorder. Will this work or do you need to make use of both sdi outputs?

This Micro converter is 1/4 of the price of the updown cross hd converter, so that's why i'm asking :D

Thank you,

Anne

Youll need the newer ultrastudio 3g models introduced recently. So new in fact they might still be back order, but these have been reworked to handle 1080p 50/60

No the Micro Converters do not do any scaling or frame rate conversions. You need something like the Mini Converter UpDownCross HD to change the frame rate of a signal.

Or if you have a Thunderbolt 3 port, you could use one of the new UltraStudio 3G Recorder models as Andrew suggests (although I don't believe these units have actually started shipping to end users yet).

Thank you all for the advise.

I did manage to get hold of a Blackmagic Recorder 3G and try it out. I was supprised that the recorder uses a thunderbold 3 connection instead of the thunderbolt 2 port from the previous Mini Recorder.
I have a Macbook from mid 2014 which only has 2 thunderbold 2 ports. I tried an usb-c to usb-a 3,0 cable, but my macbook notified me that I had to use a thunderbolt connection. So I though: I will need a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter.

I tried out the following in the Apple Store:
• Plug the thunderbold 3 side in the recorder
• Plug my thunderbold 2 male-to-male cable in the recorder
• Plug the other end in my thunderbolt 2 input in my macbook

It doesn't seem to recognize the recorder. Probably because the adapter is made to be plugged in the other way around with the Thunderbold 3 side in the newer Macbooks. Is there a work around for this or is the only possible way to get a new Macbook...?

Thanks in advance,

Anne

This is a good question. I believe the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter is designed to be bidirectional, but I think it may not always work with Thunderbolt 3 devices that are powered through the Thunderbolt 3 port (rather devices with a separate external power supply). I think this is due in part to the fact that the power delivery specifications are different between Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 3. Which means that a Thunderbolt 2 port may not deliver the power needed for a Thunderbolt 3 device.

With the earlier UltraStudio HD Mini, which was also a Thunderbolt 3 powered video capture device, I'm pretty sure it only worked directly with Thunderbolt 3 ports, and did not work through a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter.

The Thunderbolt 3 devices are able to pull more power from the TBT3 port then what the Thunderbolt 2 port can deliver. So even if using Apples bidirectional thunderbolt 2-3 adapter the computers TBT2 port are unable to deliver the needed power.

There are some externally powered thunderbolt adapters which can be used to inject more power into the TBT3 devices which then will work on a TBT2 port.
But if mobility is the key here I would say it might be better to look at a more modern Mac featuring Thunderbolt 3 ports then trying to do life extension on old one.

Hello,

Eventually I went for the UpdownCross HD converter and the old Mini Recorder and everything seems to work fine now. When I'll get a new Macbook one day I will go for the 3G Recorder as the two devices I use now do get a bit bulky.

Everyone thanks for the advice.

Regards,

Anne
