Where is URSA Mini 4K?

PostSat Aug 01, 2020 6:16 pm

I see it on B&H website: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... html/specs
but not here on Blackmagic Design website.
It looks to me like a perfect companion to the BPCC 6K, at a price affordable by me.

That's an old camera, discontinued now. I'm not sure why B&H say it's backordered and they expect stock in September 2020. Maybe they know something we don't know, or maybe it's a typo. The only Ursas on BMD's site now are the 4.6K G2 and the 12K.

I'd love to get this "Old Camera".

Why would you want the ursa mini 4k? I have one. I would never buy it again though. I would go with a pocket 4k or 6k. the ursa mini 4K was more expensive than the pocket 6K.

A camera that doesn’t get much love likely can be found for sale online.

I have a BMPC 4K. Though now I mostly use the newer BM cameras for production work (mostly short narrative films), I love the image from this camera. As is often said, the original cameras required proper lighting for best results. They were not low light cameras. But for the right application, used in a well lit set, the cameras provided luscious, cinematic images. I would guess you could pick one up for a very reasonable price these days.

Often, if I am doing a multi camera shoot, I will set up the BMPC on sticks as a master wide with great results cutting in the pockets or Ursa Mini 4.6.

It's a long discontinued camera.

The only reason it would be a good companion to the P6K would be if you wanted a global shutter camera and / or XLR sound.

In very other way the P6K is the better camera.

Better in low light by a LOT. The Ursa Mini 4K is at best 400, and it's noise profile demands you try to rate it lower than that.

I think that for the right price and good lighting this camera has something to offer. Here are some shots I did with one in Prores 422:

This thing's dynamic range is terrible, it uses the same global shutter sensor as the big ursa and bmpc4k. I distinctively remember trying out the bmpc4k after shooting with a original bmpcc and broadcast eng cameras like digibeta, And being shocked at just how terrible the dr is on that sensor. I think with a right gamma/scene file the digibetas we were shooting on can actually have more dr than the bmpc4k. And that's a standard def 2/3inch 3ccd camera from 20 some years ago. Of course if you got proper lighting for them the image looks quite lovely. But as soon as you go into a more demanding situations the bmpcc kicked it's ass in both the highlights and shadows. It makes sense since from cinema5d's testing, the ursa mini 4k only have 8.2 stops of dr, compared to the bmpcc's 11.2 in prores. Not to mention the bmpcc's native iso is 800 compared to the ursa's 400.

I wonder if the link I posted above to the B&H page refers to same Ursa Mini 4K people here are complaining about. It says Super-35mm sensor and 12 stops dynamic range:

That's the one. We're talking about the same camera.

That sensor was also present in the Ursa and the Production 4K cinema camera, and all had similar issues.

And also used in AJA's Cion, the never quite made it Apertus and a few others.

Has the "same sensor" as the old BMD Production 4K camera.

That's not a good one!

BMD was just rushing out to get out a 4K S35 raw camera at a very low price.

They 4.6K sensor is waaaay better. Would choose the B4K over it as well.

Heck, I'd probably pick the old OG BMPCC over the URSA Mini 4K!
