ATEM Mini - Setting USB OUT to PREVIEW

PostThu Jul 30, 2020 4:31 pm

Greetings, all. I've seen this topic covered loosely in a few other threads, but I wanted the chance to ask this question more explicitly.

Is it possible to have the ATEM Mini (not Pro) send the PROGRAM feed through the HDMI OUT, and then have the PREVIEW feed sent through the USB OUT? If not, would this be possible in a software/firmware update?

Look forward to hearing back about this!

No, the USB webcam output is always the Program output from the ATEM Mini. There's no way to configure this at the moment.

The only video output that is configurable is the HDMI output, which could be set to output the Preview signal to an HDMI monitor, if desired.

Thanks, Dave!

I've got a weird set-up that requires the HDMI output to be the Program signal, as it would be sent through an extender into a distant room. I was hoping the USB output could be set to the Preview signal so that the person at the switcher could preview shots before cutting.

It's too bad this isn't a feature already!

I wouldn't expect this as a future feature. The AMP solves most of these issues.

Best,

David

AMP have the bigger problem .. When U use HDMI out as PROGRAM OUT, then u miss MULTIVIEWER .. Preview too, like ATEM MINI .. I hope , that USB its not fixed , and BMD give us posibility to change source of USB output in future .. PLEASE !

Although it requires another device, the ATEM Streaming Bridge would effectively provide this capability. It captures the program stream sent from the ATEM Mini's Ethernet port and turns it back into an HDMI or SDI video signal.

I'm actually looking for an answer about this. I'm wondering if I can stream from the Pro to a streaming service (in my case, Facebook Live) and use the Streaming Bridge on my local network to view the stream in an overflow room.
In their Production Update video,
it seems that you have to select the Streaming Bridge as the platform.

Any thoughts? Anyone with more insight?

This is probably a stupid suggestion but I thought i'd ask it anyway....
Would a USB-C to HDMI dongle provide an additional HDMI output?

No, this won't work unfortunately. USB-C to HDMI output adapters make use of the USB Alternate Mode specifications:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C#Alt ... ifications

With USB-C Alt Mode, the device is effectively sending an HDMI video stream over some of the wires in the USB connector. Which means that device itself needs to support whatever USB-C Alt Mode (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.) the connected adapter is using.

All of the USB-C Alt Mode profiles are optional parts of the USB specification and I don't believe that the ATEM Mini supports any of them.

Note that the USB webcam output from the ATEM Mini works in a totally different way. For the USB webcam output to work, it must be connected to a computer which acts as the USB Host (while the ATEM Mini becomes the USB Device end). The ATEM Mini then operates as a USB Video Class (UVC) device providing a compressed video stream to the computer. The USB Video Class specifications have been around for a long time (since 2003) which is why at this point most major computer operating systems have built-in support for UVC devices such as USB webcams or the ATEM Mini.

We also are interested in this feature. We run the HDMI out into a Teradek Vidiuu so we can bond the connections and get a better quality picture.

+1 I absolutely agree. Surely this is just a software feature? If you have an HDMI-based workflow, using the USB output as a preview is the only thing that makes sense. Any vision mixer is pretty useless without a preview! And since they force you to use the Software Control in order for the ATEM Mini to be able to expose most of its functions, it seems obvious to have the preview next to the control screen, on the PC.

Greetings
Today I found a solution that in some cases may suit you

The task is to output the program via the HDMI interface, take a preview via USB-C

I work in the Resolume Arena and keep the video signal source as "Blackmagic Design" and output the video signal from the laptop via the HDMI interface, which is connected to HDMI 1 of the Atem mini

In the Atem mini control program, in the "Output" menu, you need to set Camera 1 Direct
This way, control of the output signal is directly delegated to the program and it becomes possible to view the signal arriving at the input, before u connect it

by switching between 2, 3, 4 buttons (in bus cut mode) on Atem Mini we can watch the preview in Resolume Arena (should works in VMix or OBS too) and, if necessary, attach the to the broadcast
