Ideal Settings/Tips for Slow PC Doing only 1080p Editing

PostSat Aug 15, 2020 12:14 am

Hi Guys!

Any settings/tips for optimizing Davinci Resolve performance if the pc is low end (intel it, 8gb ram, ssd hard drive, basic intel graphics card) and the editing is just on 1080p files?

I know this pc configuration does not meet the minimum requirements, but I'd love to be able to use Resolve on my laptop with this configuration. I don't use Fusion very much. Mainly editing video/audio.

Thanks!

If you are using files with H.264 compression, I'd convert them to DNxHD or Cineform with a tool like Shutter Encoder (free) to take some load off when editing. You could also try to use a 720p timeline and only increase resolution before rendering. Oh, and forget Fusion.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Thanks Uli! :-)

I think I need to get use to the fact that Davinci Resolve is for someone that probably uses Davinci Resolve for work and has high-end hardware that they can upgrade on a yearly basis to support Resolve.

I've been a Vegas user for a long time. I use Hitfilm for Fusion-type stuff, which I don't do a lot. So, maybe I need to stay with those kind of tools for now. I don't upgrade hardware that often. I use Intel i7 4770k cpu, 32Gb ram, SSD hard drive, and Nvidia 770 graphics card for my desktop. For my laptop, it's an Intel i5 with 8Gb.

Even on my desktop configuration, Davinci Resolve was not fast on startup. Editing was okay.

I've been a Vegas user for a long time. It starts up fast, even on my laptop (about 8 seconds). Hitfilm is slower on startup and rendering, but Davinci takes about 50 seconds to load up on my laptop. And Davinci takes about 1 1/2 minutes to open a video and begin playback.
