Resolve won't start

PostSat Aug 15, 2020 6:20 am

I have just got a new PC and installed Resolve. I got a message saying install sucessful. Then I got the welcome tour/video but after that Resolve did not open.

Please help :)

I installed DaVinci Resolve 16.2.5 for windows.

I have read through a few other threads on Resolve not starting and have followed those instructions to do a clean install, but keep getting the same result of getting the welcome tours after installing, but Resolve not starting after that.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you, Tim

My PC is a Dell XPS8940
Intel i7-10700 CPU @2.9GHz
16GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti - Studio driver 452.06
500GB SSD drive (C) 1T drive (D)
I am installing Resolve on C drive.
Windows 10 Home - Version 1909

I am trying to run the free version of DaVinci Resolve 16.2.5. I have also tried installing 16.2.24 with no luck.

I have followed the instructions to do a complete uninstall of DR numerous times and have then restarted and re installed DR. I get a message saying DR installed correctly and get the welcome tour video and then do the quick setup that comes next. In this I select an HD project. Then DR does not open.

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 10 and got DaVinci Resolve to install and start up. Then my PC wanted to do updates to windows which closed Resolve for the updates. After the updates, I am back to not being able to start Resolve.

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Hi Dwaine,

Thank you for your help

I get a error message when I run Capture logs -"zip I/O error: No such file or directory" "zip error: could not create output file (C:/users/tim/Desktop/DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20201908_112046.zip"

My NFO file is here https://max.mailbigfile.com/ddf08a49b20 ... tFiles.php

Move your display from the onboard graphics connector and plug it into the GTX1660Ti card.

If you have more than one display, make sure they are all plugged into the GTX card.

It appears that the latest Windows updates have really exacerbated issues with Resolve and Intel drivers.

You are the 3rd or 4th person today whose logs appear to show Resolve crashing immediately after detecting the GPUs, in systems with both Intel integrated GPU's and NVIDIA GPUs.

Unlike the others, you seem to have the latest proper Dell Intel driver loaded, and the latest NVIDIA Studio driver.

To confirm, your display WAS plugged into the onboard graphics, and you've now moved it to the GTX card?

Can you send an updated NFO file?

Here is an updated nfo file https://max.mailbigfile.com/c08f93c5acf ... tFiles.php

I had been trying many things to get DR to run and looking at many youtube video and the forum here, so was trying lots of things so can't be 100% sure where I had my two monitors plugged into. But I do think they were in the GTX graphic card. I am now using only one monitor definitely into the GTX.

Again thank you for your help!! Most appreciated

Did you just do another Windows update?

First NFO was version 1909. The new NFO is version 2004.

And there is a bunch more stuff loaded now. Lots of Adobe and Intel modules loaded in the new NFO that were not in the first NFO.

Right click in an open area of your desktop. One of the menu selections should be NVIDIA Control Panel.

Select that. Then select Manage 3D Settings. You should have a Preferred Graphics Processor menu.

Select that. It's probably in Auto-Select mode. Select High-performance NVIDIA Processor.

nvidia control panel preferred graphics.PNG
nvidia control panel preferred graphics.PNG (63.49 KiB) Viewed 42666 times

Then click Apply.

Now see if Resolve will launch.

If it doesn't, open File Explorer and go to this folder:

C:\Windows\System32

Find the igc64.dll file and rename it igc64.dll.tmp

Restart the computer.

Now does Resolve launch? If not, send an updated Resolve log and NFO.

Re: Resolve won't start

I'm new here and new to Resolve 16 having used FCPX in past.
I have been using the free version of R16 since the early summer and I think the suite is awesome, but with quite a steep learning curve.
I have experienced intermittent problems with R16 refusing to start but I have got round the problem by re-booting my Acer laptop (Win 10) and R16 usually starts OK. I have tried several clean "re-installs" of R16 but there always seems to be some residual files/bits of software from R16 that get picked up again and are present in the so called clean install. In other words it's not a "default clean install to factory settings". I've even gone in to Windows system and program/hidden files and removed all reference to Black Magic Design, but there are still fragments of the software somewhere in the system that
re-present when the program is re-installed.
Anyone any ideas on this phenomenon?

Hello,

I'm having the same issues. I uninstalled Resolve and reinstalled with the latest update.

I don't have igc64.dll a file anywhere on my machine?

I also dont have the same settings as you in "Manage 3D Settings".

Hi there,

This problem is happening for me as well. I did the recent Windows update before the problem started. In Task Manager, upon trying to start Resolve, the status "Suspended" flashes on and off for Resolve before giving up and closing. No visual indication of Resolve ever appears in the main Windows interface.

Here are the two files requested:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cfrcbrrt0hbzs ... 3.zip?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/e3y03b30hoe4j ... g.nfo?dl=0

This is on a Dell XPS system using Resolve 15, Intel graphics. Everything was working swimmingly before the Windows 10 update.

@Brian: Remove all USB and BlueTooth devices from your system, other than a WIRED USB mouse and keyboard. Does that allow Resolve to start? If not, please provide a Windows System Information .NFO file.

Figured I'd tag along to this thread as I'm also having this issue with the free version of 16.2.5015. Last status seen as the program tries to load is "Looking for Control Surface" and then the splash page disappears and the process closes. My 980 TI is a bit long in the tooth (waiting for 3090) but I believe should still be compatible. Windows and Nvidia drivers are up to date. Happy to spend some time troubleshooting this with someone.

Hi Dwaine,

Thanks for your help.

I have updated Windows to the latest version and also added the other programs I need to work.

I found igc64.dll but my machine won't let me rename it.

In NVIDIA Control Panel, there is no Preferred Graphics Processor menu. My menu looks the same as the image by minimalmassive » Thu Aug 20, 2020 1:25 am post.

Here are my NFO file, Capturelogs file and a screen shot of Nvidia. https://max.mailbigfile.com/c6ab6fdc08e ... tFiles.php

OK, time to take the big hammer to the Intel driver.

Download and install DDU, from here:

https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/view ... f=5&t=3216

There are lots of "Download" links for 3rd party apps. Make sure you click download for the DDU app, which is labeled: ***Official Download Here***

It will recommend you run it in Safe mode. I've never had issues not running it in Safe mode, so take your choice there. Edit: That said, getting into Safe mode is a pain. Just run it normally.

When you first run DDU, it should put up the Options screen and ask if you want to change anything. If you don't get that, just select the Options menu. It will look something like this:

DDU_Options.PNG
DDU_Options.PNG (56.72 KiB) Viewed 42559 times

Enable the last Advanced option, to prevent Windows from reinstalling the current driver when the system reboots after DDU has removed the driver.

Close the Options menu and you should get to a screen that looks like this:

DDU_Select.PNG
DDU_Select.PNG (58.13 KiB) Viewed 42559 times

In the Select Device Type menu, select GPU.

In the Select Device area, select Intel.

DDU_Settings.PNG
DDU_Settings.PNG (63.94 KiB) Viewed 42559 times

Then click the blue Clean and Restart area.

After the system reboots, if you look in System Information - Components - Display, hopefully the Intel device says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and no drivers are installed for it.

Now will Resolve launch?

Well, for me, the DDU fix got me halfway there. Resolve will now start, but it immediately tells me it can't find an OpenCL capable GPU, and my only choice is to quit.

@Chris: Let it be noted, that I did not suggest that YOU run DDU.

You only have the Intel integrated GPU, and now that it has no driver, Resolve can't use it.

However, you can take this opportunity to try installing a different Intel driver than the one that was previously installed:

26.20.100.7986

You might go to the Intel site and use their automatic driver install process, and see if what that installs, works better with Resolve:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/produc ... aphics-520

Click the Get Started button to automatically update your Intel drivers.

Hi Dwaine,

Fair enough, you definitely didn't tell me to do the DDU fix, but hey, I'm a self starter!

I reinstalled drivers from Intel as you suggested, and problem solved. Hopefully Windows won't cause problems on subsequent upgrades.

Thank you!

Hi Dwaine,

It seems to be a no go for me. However, I did uncheck all the options of uninstalling all the NVIDIA drivers. We also do a lot of 3D rendering on our GPUs and it made me a little nervous mid-project to experiment with uninstalling those? If it's the Intel driver that's causing issues... do I need to also uninstall the Nvidia ones?

Thanks again for your help.

You don't want to mess with the NVIDIA stuff with DDU.

If you are sure you removed all USB devices (including BlueTooth dongles), then try the following:

Take the system off the network and disable the firewall. Does that help?

If not, open a PowerShell in "Run as Administrator" mode and enter the following:

netsh int ipv4 set dynamicportrange protocol=tcp startport=49152 numberofports=16384

Run that. Did that help? If not, in the same PowerShell window, enter the following:

Get-NetTCPConnection | Where-Object { $_.State -eq "Listen" -and $_.LocalPort -eq 1144 } | ForEach-Object { (get-process -id $_.OwningProcess).Description }

Does it return any apps? Anything other than FusionScript services may be an issue.

If none of that helps, we're getting low on things to try.

netsh int ipv4 set dynamicportrange protocol=tcp startport=49152 numberofports=16384

Run that. Did that help? If not, in the same PowerShell window, enter the following:

Get-NetTCPConnection | Where-Object { $_.State -eq "Listen" -and $_.LocalPort -eq 1144 } | ForEach-Object { (get-process -id $_.OwningProcess).Description }

Does it return any apps? Anything other than FusionScript services may be an issue.

If none of that helps, we're getting low on things to try.

I have the same problem since my system updated last night. I checked the gpu and its in high performance, went to igc64.dll file to rename it igc64.dll.tmp but got message that I need permission, so now I'm going to the ddu step. I forgot hoe to log into safe. can you please help. I know that it varies from computer to computer. I have a lenovo 7i

I would recommend not logging into safe. Just run DDU in the normal mode.

Hi Dwaine,

I had the same problem after my windows updated. DaVinci would not start at all. I did a clean install of windows and then found this thread and followed all of your advice. After running the DDU Resolve will now start up. But immediatly after selecting a project it crashes again. When creating a new project it gets stuck on a black screen, it does not crash, but it doesn't build up the workspace either.

Here is a link to my NFO and Capture Log as well as a screenshot of what happens when I try to create a new project: https://we.tl/t-2ejTo5Q5Fy

Thanks for your help!

@Ayse: I'm a bit confused. The Resolve logs appear to show you've used DDU to remove both the Intel and NVIDIA drivers, as they have both reverted to Microsoft Basic Video Adapter mode, in the logs.

But the NFO file shows a current driver loaded for the NVIDIA GTX 960M.

Is it possible you've restarted your system since you last tried Resolve, and it updated the NVIDIA driver?

Can you try launching Resolve again? If it's still unhappy, send another log and NFO.

@Ricardo: Not sure I understand the question. Are you saying DDU is not launching?

If so, this is the file you should have: DDU v18.0.2.8.exe

Just to make sure you didn't click on one of the other myriad misleading links on the DDU site.

No its not launching. Will this be addressed in a dr update?

Do you mean DDU is not launching? Do you have the file I suggested?

The way you've phrased the question about not launching and asking if it will be addressed in a dr update is a bit confusing, and I want to make sure what specifically you are asking about.

If the question is: Will a Resolve update fix the issue with the Intel driver, probably not, or not anytime soon. You really need to get DDU running and get rid of the Intel driver.

Spoke to soon. After the ddu it worked fine then I closed it and since then when I try to open resolve the flash screen is on up to where it says monitor, then the flash screen disappears but the resolve icon is in the taskbar. and wont open. If I hit alt-tab I can see the resolve opening window and its says project manager, I uninstalled and reinstalled resolve but the problem is still rhere.

It looks like you've never sent a log or NFO file. Please do that.

Also, check to see if Windows reinstalled the Intel driver that DDU removed.

Look in System Information - Components - Display

If the Intel driver doesn't say: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, then Windows reinstalled the driver.

If Windows has reinstalled the Intel driver, run DDU again, and make sure you go to the Advanced Options area and select the option not to let Windows automatically install the driver. Then remove the Intel driver again.

Found the solution, Apparently the ddu installer changed my display configuration. I have a laptop and a full monitor. I noticed that the cursor disappeared behind behind the monitors right edge.. I went to the display configure and made my full display the only display (the way I had it before the ddu thing) and problem solved
