What Mac to buy for video editing?

PostSun Sep 13, 2020 8:28 pm

It is time to replace my Macbook Pro that I bought 2015.
2015-2020 I worked mostly, beside multichannel music recording, with FCPX.
I edited multicamera productions with up to 20 angles, ofcourse in prores. Footage from Canon DSLR’s.

Coming years 2020-2025 i will edit mainly Davinci Resolve projects.
I have replaced my DSLR’s with four BMPCC4K and a ATEM Mini Pro ISO.

I’m mainly using BRAW 4k Q5 in the cameras.

I can’t afford the $10.000 Super Mac.

Thinking of either a:
1. Macabook Pro 16”.
2. A maximized Mac Mini.
3. Some kind of iMac.

I would prefer a laptop to meet my needs.
I like to sometimes take home some jobs from my studio to the couch in front of the fireplace in the quiet corner of the home. But if the power of that type of computer is not enough, then I can rethink.

The dream would be if my budget of about $ 3000 would be enough.
If it is not sufficient, then I have to re-prioritize in future investments.

Please help me with good advice.
I want to work fast and dislike when the computer gets slow and the famous colorful beach ball spins in front of me.

The one with the fastest GPU for your budget.

I wouldn’t go for a laptop, it’ll cost you a premium.
If you can afford a second screen, the mini with an eGPU might be an option.
It works well enough with its internal GPU for some concept editing and becomes quite capable for grading with the eGPU.

To add the Blackmagic eGPU is a great idea! Thank you!

I have pretty much work in my recording studio.
www.playingwithmusic.se

But I also already have about 20 livestream gigs outside the studio this autumn.

Since I have to bring 4 BMPCC4K, cables, screens, audio equipment for every gig.
Maybe I could get a proper dedicated case for a Mac Mini and a Blackmagic eGBU...

But a laptop is always a laptop.

13” laptop and the Blackmagic eGPU would be pretty powerful also right?!

Or a Macbook Air for livestreaming & cafe emailing, and a Mac Mini and a eGPU for the studio...

Thoughts?!

Doesn’t need to be the eGPU by BM, look at my sig. Lighter and cheaper.

I second the new iMac, it’s quite capable, but bulkier.
