How to move Resolve Studio to new computer?

PostFri Sep 18, 2020 11:21 pm

I'm getting ready to migrate from a fully-loaded 2013 iMac14,2 to an iMac Pro.

How do I migrate my 'magic number' Resolve Studio to the new machine so that I don't lose an activation in the old machine? Is it as simple as hitting [Deactivate License] under the [Help] menu?

Is there anything else I need to know about migrating to a new machine?

-Most footage is on an external Drobo™®© raid.

-I think caches and projects are stored on the system drive (1TB SSD)

-I intend to get a 2TB SSD in the new machine and partition it 1TB System and 1TB for Resolve disk caches (4TB is a little too pricey.)

Thank you;

=K

You don't lose your licenses, even if you move a hundred times. The process is very simple: if you activate the third machine, the first activation is canceled automatically. All you need is an internet connection.

If you don't have dozens of projects, I'd just export all the projects and import them into a new database on the new machine, so everything is cleaned up. Worst case you'll need to point Resolve to some sources again.

Partitioning is not much in use anymore.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Karen,

Thankfully because you're Mac-based the process of migrating is very straight-forward, however there are other issues that you've brought up in your question that open-up the pandoras' box of information, especially where the Drobo is concerned.

I've got decades of experience with this environment and often consult with post-production houses across the globe. So if you really want help with this, send me PM and we'll arrange an old-school chat.

There's just too much info to type it all out here...

If you want to keep it simple, just deactivate the license on the iMac before you activate the license on the MacPro.

If you want to move your projects over, you should either make a Resolve database backup, and restore it on the new machine, and/or, create project exports on the current machine and import those into the new machine.

If you have projects with stills that you want to keep, the only way to do that is to Export With Stills, those projects. Then when you Import them into the new machine, the stills will be there as well.

Hello Everybody!

I've one installation on my previous MAC M1 and now I'd like to install Davinci Resolve on my new M1 MAX Mac.
Unfortunately I can't find the activation code (which was inside a book, originally delivered to me).
Is there any way to recover my code from the "activated version on the old Mac"?
I'm afraid that if I deactivate the license on the old Mac, there won't be any possibility to recover it.

Thanks for support in this matter.
