2.5K RAW Problem with BMCC 2.5K

PostFri Sep 25, 2020 12:51 pm

When I try to record 2.5K on my BMCC, I get a warning saying "Media Offline" in some of the frames. I didn't have this problem before. It started a couple of months ago. Could it be a problem with BMCC or should I change my SSD?

Are there any frames missing in the footage folder?

Yes, there are frames that I can't open with the RAW Image app. It is just saying we don't support this format. I think they coincide with the Media Offline frames off the video.

Try another SSD.

This probably would be an absolute answer, considering the other SSD have no flaws, but I don't have any other SSD nor my friends and buying Sandisk Extreme Pro is quite expensive.

To find out if the SSD is dying or just too slow, try some format with a low datarate, like ProRes LT.

Does the 2.5K use a cable to connect to the SSD? If so check the cable. If you connect your SSD to a computer does it have any issues writing?

The SSD is plugged into the camera.

I have this happen all the time but with my BMPCC 4K, and BMRAW. It’s most likely a bug in Resolve. Try updating, try copying the files over to different drive. Once I even fixed it by changing the frame rate of the sequence from 29.98 to 24, or vice versa.

This is my most common bug in Resolve.

There are a couple of questions I had to answer:
-Yes, I am using a cable to connect my SSD to my PC. However, I was using it before and there was no problem. Also, when I watch RAW video on my camera in some frames there appears a noise and I think their timing match with the missing frames. I think it isn't related to Resolve.
-When I record with any type of Prores there is no flaw in the video. This problem occurs only in RAW.
-I never changed my SSD and this problem started to pop up two months ago.

SSDs can deteriorate and DNG-Sequences are demanding.
Time to try another SSD or stick to ProRes. Of course, it's hard to tell if the connectors in the camera might be worn out or corroded.

You haven't mentioned the exact type and name of the SSD.

If it has worked before, one might assume that something has changed in between afterwards.

1. Try to read and copy a faulty sequence from the SSD on another computer - just to make sure that isn't the source of your problem.
2. I would try to replace the cable/connector you are using to read the SSD. Maybe it has been damaged or worn out.
3. If the root is the SSD itself, you might try a secure erase to bring it back to full working capability.

It is SanDisk Extreme Pro(SDSSDXPS-240G). I think I will do a secure erase, as Robert advised.

Try to clean electronic contcat pins on you SSD with isopropyl alcohol and wipe them with paper sheet. Next add some isopropyl alcohol to SSD contact pins again and quickly plug/unplug into camera. Clean with paper and repeat this few more times.
You may also try to clean your SSD to PC cable adapter in the same way.

If it won't help - try another SSD to PC cable adapter. Try another SSD.
