Building a PC for amateur editing

PostWed Sep 23, 2020 7:45 pm

Hello knowledgeable forum members!
I am posting here in hopes of having some people help me make a more informed buying decision.

I have been doing some very amateur video editing on my own PC. Mostly cuts, adding text, occasionally some fusion titles. We would like to take our editing game a little further in the future with more complex stuff but this for now.

I am helping my friend build a PC so that he can edit videos for the channel too. We want to edit mostly 1080p 60fps footage from .MP4 format using Windows 10. We would like to have a smooth editing experience but dont mind a little bit of stutter here and there. We just dont want it to be frustrating to work with.

I have some decent knowledge about computers but I dont consider myself an expert by any means especially when it comes to video editing. So I have attached a screenshot of a potential build that I made on PCPartPicker. If you want the link or have any questions you can DM me or reply here!

I am looking to answer a few questions.
1. Is this sufficient for our amateur editing needs?
2. Is there anything in excess? I would like to trim the fat if possible to reduce the price of the build.
3. Are there other things you would recommend? For example, I read something along the lines of that Davinci Resolve relies heavily on CUDA cores in the GPU so we want as many of those as possible(This might not be true, I'm just giving an example of some sort of specialized knowledge that can help.). I just wanna make sure I'm not missing anything crucial or helpful.

Thank you for reading and especially thank you to anyone who can help! I am very grateful for your assistance! You are helping me a lot :)

Woah! Don't buy that Ryzen yet! There's a new one, the Ryzen 5 3600 it's only 199 where I live. (Not about 350.)

Out of curiosity, what's the total?

Oh yes! And in answer to your question, the GPU does most of the processing while editing and effects. The CPU will handle decoding and encoding. People recommend a really strong GPU and an average CPU. So a 2060 is fine, but you may find you want more power down the line.

I very much appreciate you taking the time to help us by making that build, but I think it's too pricy for my friend. He really doesn't want to go much over $1k. Good thing is he already has keyboard, mouse and monitor though so your build is nearly at his price range if we remove the monitor!
Is there anything you would suggest cutting back on? I think we could do a 1TB HDD with 250GB SSD, he wont need more storage than that. Would it be cheaper to get a slightly lower performing CPU and then overclocking it to get the same performance? Or would the cost of the CPU cooler outweigh any costs we cut from the CPU?

Thanks again for the help bohndigga, we eagerly await your reply :)

To all curious, I talked with bohndigga in PM and he made a build for my friend that came to just over 1k. We went for it. Not just gotta wait for all the parts to arrive!

I will be unsubscribing from this topic now that it has been resolved.

Hi everyone. I usually buy brand new PC from store. What is the difference between custom PC and PC from store? Perhaps custom PCs are better since for a certain amount you can build a PC from better components? Thanks

The difference is mainly the price.

You can get better hardware for cheaper if you build it yourself.

However, if something goes wrong and you've built it yourself, you are usually out of luck. There isn't much support for self-built systems.
