Compliments on Resolve 17

PostMon Nov 09, 2020 9:16 pm

Wow! This update is fantastic.
Got some of my requests and some things I didn't even know I needed.
This thread is for compliments only! Well done BMD !

The possibility for clip linked audio automation. Yes!
And I have a new interest in looking into the cutpage with the new speed editor. What a deal!

What are you most excited about?

+1
Already playing with the beta. Crashed once. To be expected. Fairlight updates are magnificent. Cut page I don’t use much, but probably will now with the Speed panel and the ability to focus on clips in the batch window. Multicam from Sync bin almost looks like you can “paint” angle clips down onto the timeline. Love it.
Don’t use Fusion.
Media management much better. And Color... well the best just got better.
The Fairlight Panel, whilst expensive, is a dream.
Collaboration is very smart.
Not sure how long before we get to a stable version, but worth waiting for imho.

I got four of the Feature Requests I started included with Resolve 17! That's amazing!

I, too, may have to try out the Cut page with the new Speed panel.

Also very happy with the new inspector.
And in general that things are available across tabs and on more logical places.
Resolve is getting more intuitive, less hidden features, and that is a direction I really like.

It was a pleasure to use with Editor keyboard. But the QWERTY part of that was useless. So now the balance is right. And with the new features... well worth the money.

For the brief periods in between crashing when I get to explore it, it looks great. My favorite feature so far is being able to preview the Fusion effects, transitions, and titles. This is great, it was so painful having to add each one to the timeline, wait for it to cache, then play it back only to find out its not what I want.

+++5 FOR RESOLVE 17 :D !!!!!!!!

I propose requests for beta 2 :) IN COLOR

- Possibility to add matte on compound node
- In Key/external matte, add invert matte (negativ) and distortion (lens correction)
- Right clic on the node and add fonction for active or desactive keyframe of this node.
- when I scroll in keyframe don't move Master, always on the top
- In timeline keyframes the same name for the corrector like the node (and the number)
- move Stabiliser classic in the same menu like windows, stabilizer and FX
- add Stabiliser on node, not just on clip for more controls (multi stab)
- Possibility to move up and down powergrade album in gallery
- Possibility to move up and down the groups in the list on the left or possibility in alphabetical order
- Drag and drop the clip in the group on the left
- Possibility to change the name and delete group, directly in the list on the left, like powergrade album
- On the bottom of the viewer add chanel Red, Green, Blue, Black and White, and alpha
- Possibility to cancel grab all stills and grab missing stills

When I work with group filter, why there are this message ???
Currently when the message appears, we must close it, return to the groups filters and switch to all clips mode and return to timeline.
It's a lot of manipulation for nothing
If I click on timeline when i work with group filter, is that I need to go to timeline, so why not switch automatically or add clear filter option ?????

I am glad that BMD finally improved the font display problem. But about the schedule of editing the page. Has the problem of moving up and down improved? Is there a good shortcut that allows users to change the up and down position of the timeline faster? In yesterday’s video, I did not see any introduction about this content.

The new version has many good features. But the requirements for computers seem to be higher. I can edit very smoothly in version 16. However, in the 17th edition, stuttering often occurs in the media. Use clip rendering on the timeline. It cannot make the movie play smoothly. I use BRAW of BMPCC4K as my working format.

About the special effect transition and text preview part. I like this feature. But this will also put more pressure on the computer. Let DR17 not work properly. Hope to improve these issues in future updates.

Thank you for what you are doing, you are revolutionizing the industry. I'm more than happy to support you guys. You guys offer good products for a reasonable price, so i don't mind spending money on your products. You won me over, I will be buying the Speed Editor.
Keep doing what you are doing, taking care of the little guys, there are a lot of people out there switching over to your products.

You may already know this...but there is a free one built into Windows 10, its a little clunky but its free and it works, its called the XBOX Game Bar. I use it occasionally to add clips to documentary type videos when I need to scroll through a website or for tutorials where I am creating an instructional video.

Personally I'd much rather the developers focus on improving the stability and video editing features vs duplicating a capability that is provided by many other vendors already. Resources aren't infinite and a feature that seems simple is probably much more work than you think (any video editor can relate to that).

For startup issues, please check the following possibilities first:

Nvidia graphics driver: If you're on Windows or Linux with an nvidia graphics card, please check that your minimum driver versions are satisfied. They can be found as part of minimum requirements at the end of this announcement.
Intel driver for Windows: There have been recent reports of a Windows update causing issues with Intel drivers. The fix has been to cleanly re-install drivers from the Intel website.
• For those updating from Resolve 15, please recheck the minimum requirements (found at the end of this announcement).

We strongly recommend a custom clean re-install of the driver if you've not done so.

For other issues, or if your startup problem persists:
• Please search for existing relevant threads.
• If one exists, please add an entry with the description, context and other information requested, as well as a link to the log archives.
• If there are no threads available, please create a thread with a clear title.

For new posters, please prefer titles like "Resolve 17.0 b1 - Alpha matte does not work in this scenario" (Example) to titles like "Help!" or "Resolve 17 issue". This not only helps others find a relevant area to aggregate reports, but also allows experienced users to suggest fixes or workarounds while Blackmagic employees investigate.

The ability to see an audio waveform in the Fusion page, and the numerous Color page updates, are both particularly appreciated. And the ability to wobble on Edit page titles to see what they look like without dragging them onto the timeline. This is a good suite of improvements. Thanks!

Edit: And... I'm regularly appreciating the Edit page right-click for "Auto-align by waveform". Much more streamlined process for replacing an audio track (when the video recorder has scratch audio to be replaced with solid wireless mic audio) than via the old edit page / sync / ... steps and clicks.

Thanks for letting me know about the xbox recording... I didnt know that. When i make video of Davinci Resolve, I use filmora to record screen. So two softwares are open which adds to the load.

Same here

It really looks like a great update! I am looking forward to the color warper, audio sync in timeline, magic mask and all the other helpful improvements.
Even though there are still some bizarre behaviors that have been around for a long time.

But we have to keep in mind that even the studio version is basically free and I haven't had to pay for an update in all the years I've been using Resolve. It's just incredible.

Congratulations and thanks for this new version!

Edit: Any words on when to expect 16.3 stable?

Great update. Especially the fairlight and color improvements. I also find these two interesting: the speed editor and the fairlight desktop console (my desk is getting crowded ...)

And my (t)rusty MacPro 2010 is very happy that he is still allowed to join the party :-)

Also – is Magic Mask limited to the Studio version?

I own Studio but don't have the dongle with me.

Thanks!

but we MUST have ProRes RAW soon...

I want to take advantage of the 12-bit colorspace, but without RAW support, I am limited to 10-bit.

I feel this was a missed opportunity

I always recommend hardware recorders for screen capture you intend to edit. They typically offer editing friendly options like DNx and ProRes, whereas software normally doesn't.

I just started playing with this beta version and I'm super impressed. Not having the front preview used to annoy the crap out of me, so having that simple feature makes a whole world of difference. I the simple things such as having a visual reference to the different features and options makes a huge difference. It makes it more user friendly and speeds up your workflow.

Compliments to Blackmagic and the entire team

PostTue Nov 10, 2020 3:00 pm

I don't know if this really belongs here but I just really wanted to say thank you.

I am an EXTREMELY new novice user to video editing. I have seen and had time to tinker with others, such as Premier and such but when I found this software I was blown away by what I saw. The features and versatility of this software almost made me cry. I have just recently started to make YouTube videos and absolutely love using your software and have already done things I never thought I could do. They may seem simple to the most advanced and seasoned users but to me it is a God send. I sing praises about it to everyone that will listen. I don't know HOW you can afford to do this, but please never stop.

I have been in the computer industry for many years and RARELY have I found a company that allows users the ability to have such powerful features without crippling the software. I can only think of 3 companies that fit this description with Blackmagic being one.

Thanks to your fantastic crew of engineers you have provided the little people the ability to try, learn and increase our knowledge of the video editing software world. Words can not express how happy I am to have found this program. My biggest regret is that as a novice who is not even in the video editing field, I am not in a position to be able to purchase any of your hardware and software packages. If I could, I would gladly purchase equipment from you from cameras to video editing interfaces.

I look forward to the day when I can afford and purchase the complete package of DaVinci Resolve and help you with your continuation of producing software that is second to none.

Please keep up the good work and I hope to be able to use your software for a very long time. You deserve any and all the credit you can get.

For those who have inquired whether DaVinci Resolve already runs on the new Mac Silicon hardware:

Apple just presented their new "M1" Chip (the first chip of Apple's Silicon lineup)). DaVinci Resolve was one of the first example apps they showed on that System, albeit just for a few seconds.

On another note: Rendering a timeline in FCPX allegedly up to 6x faster. Curious what the non-marketing number is for DR...

Yes, I love this addition BUT some of my fonts have disapeared now. One in particular is the main font used for my company name and logo stuff. Not having it is a real problem. Has anyone else experienced this? It is a True Type Font (TTF). I had two versions of it because of a weird issue where the edit page could only see one version, while fusion could only see the other. Very strange, but now they are both gone.

Li Chenghan wrote:The new version has many good features. But the requirements for computers seem to be higher. I can edit very smoothly in version 16. However, in the 17th edition, stuttering often occurs in the media. Use clip rendering on the timeline.

My video itself seems to play fine, but having an issue with the sound not playing for a few seconds at a time especially when speed ramping. Audio on either end of the speed ramp does not want to play the first or second time I try, sometimes not at all. The more I increase the speed, the worse it gets. There is also an issue in re-timing an audio clip. When you adjust it too many times, it stops updating the length of clip as you adjust the percentage of speed.

Li Chenghan wrote:About the special effect transition and text preview part. I like this feature. But this will also put more pressure on the computer.

For the most part this feature works surprisingly well on my older MacBook Pro, that said any custom library effects I designed that require longer render times don't preview, but that is what I would expect.

Overall I have only used the edit and render tabs. I did run into an issue on render that was really odd. I started the render on a 20 minute video project and it showed the time remaining continue to increase rapidly yet not a single frame rendered. I tried to abort the render but even though it said it stopped, was was still trying in the background. I quit the app and it saved and quit but would not actually completely quit. I had to do a forced quit. Once I restart it was fine though and rendered in about 3 minutes.

Really nice update. With the Speed Editor the cut page is so close to real multicam editing. Maybe the next update.

I have to agree!

R17 looks really really good.
Lots of good features like soft preview of each effect by just clicking on a effect , sending timelines, inspector now looks more professional now, ability to disable timelines is an interesting one too and lots of good features in Fusion.
Can't mention all the things that I like about R17! :D

Looks solid , I give it 8 stars out of 10 !
Good Job BMD ! :D
Only one question what took so long ??? lol ;)

If nothing else, I was glad to see proof that PeterC and the rest of the team do listen to user suggestions, and there's quite a few incorporated into 17. Lots of subtle stuff in there, too.

Fusion is a lot more responsive. I'm comparing it to V15.3 on the same machine though. The Fusion viewer zooming in and out is very smooth again. The additional layouts are extremely valuable.

Already posted this in another thread:

Interlaced timelines have now been implemented! Import your interlaced media and create new timeline with "enable interlaced processing" checkmark and timeline switches from "frames per second" to "fields per second". Thank you, BMD.

Needs some hard testing, of course, but it basically works, a few refresh match glitches here and there at playback with viewer and clean feed...perhaps it doesn't quite agree with my RX580 yet...

Just like to congratulate everyone who has been involved in this update.

I'm working on a multi episode long running TV series and thought I'd try V17 on the latest episode. I have to say, it has worked flawlessly and I have not had any issues at all apart from the loss of zoom in the timeline on the colour page with the mouse wheel.

The new colour warper has been particularly useful for quickly matching clothing in the programme.

The programmes are XML'd out of Premiere and relinked to original media.

Hi Peter

Where in the FAQ are instructions on how to find and submit a crash log? Couldn't see them I'm afraid.
I've just found a bug when I drag a keyframe down from a text item on a track that's set to reveal text using the 'crop bottom' feature over time (see the attached screen shot)

Happy to send you the crash logs if you can provide a link to the guidance on how.

The new version is much faster to work with fusion items and the new interface features are great.

Thanks

Jason

Great, I was thinking of purchasing an atem mini iso to record a multi-camera program but with the speed editor, it's much easier and simple. Maybe a new simple live Multicam (non-streaming) page is in the future. (some will cry)

A big thumbs up to the dev team, lots of great improvements.

Perhaps one day the box for entering text for titles could be made resizable, this would be a big help.

(My 17 Studio installation was crashing on loading the Cut page during startup on my Win10 desktop, which according to the logs was caused by some very old Magic Bullet and Sony plugins (which I haven't used for aeons) so once they were ditched v17 has performed flawlessly. Macbook fine from the start.)

The new vector shape nodes are really good. Fantastic addition.

Just needs Line, Triangle, Skew, and Style nodes.

Style node, in particular for changing the colour on duplicate objects.

A big appreciation for all the feature updates and a number of fixes. Plenty of great features to play with.

I am loving the simple ability to Preview Fonts, Effects, Titles etc. -- It all makes editing so much more fun and intuitive. (Note: Would be nice to have the Titles previewed over the current frame - rather than a blank background)

Also.. I see much has been done in the land of Scripting - with loads of new functions, and the ability to fire pre-OR-post Render scripts. (Note: Would be nice to have the ability to run both pre-AND-post in some instances).
