Can I generate a mesh from point cloud?

PostSun Nov 22, 2020 11:24 am

I have recently been learning how to cast shadows from 3d text into a scene.

I have a shadow cast that looks reasonable, good matching with the scene. But the shadow casts onto a hill which is not flat. It has bumps that the shadow does not follow.

Is it possible to generate a plane mesh from the point cloud to cast onto? So that the shadows follow the contour of the land?

I have googled and can't find a definitive answer.

Have come across a few pages mentioning Syntheyes.

If that's the only way to do it, I don't mind learning new software, would prefer to do it in Fusion if possible.

Thanks

As luck would have it, someone created a tutorial on this, just 10 days ago:

You can also use Meshroom to do a SLAM track on the footage. Go to their main site and you should be able to follow a couple of tutorials on how to run your footage through it and get a useable mesh and camera track. You can then import it to fusion as an FBX of both the topology and the camera. I haven't personally moved anything into Fusion from Meshroom but it translates into Maya well enough. I can't imagine it wouldn't work with Fusion.
