Remove the Thumbnail Drag when moving clips to the timeline.

PostWed Apr 08, 2020 12:05 am

I am finding it frustrating that when you drag a clip onto the timeline the clip can often be obscured by the "thumbnail image" that is floating in front of it. I would love to see this "thumbnail" image removed so that you could see the clip better when editing.

I would not vote for this. I think you need to zoom in a bit more to see things better.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Zooming doesn't change the fact that it obscures the view of what you are doing. By the time you drag the clip to the timeline there is no need for the thumbnail. In fact if your timeline is larger you will see that same thumbnail on the clip. So the "dragged" thumbnail is now not only covering up the clip constrainsts but also covering up the thumbnail that is on the clip.

I can understand the need for the thumbnail when dragging onto the overlay in the record monitor. But once you get into the timeline area it doesn't serve any purpose and hides vital information.

I know this is an old post, but is there an option to remove this yet? It literally covers my in point on the clip. Notice the screenshot.
Screen Shot 2020-12-02 at 3.10.18 PM.png
Front edge of the clip you're inserting is hidden under the thumbnail
Screen Shot 2020-12-02 at 3.10.18 PM.png (832.66 KiB) Viewed 5183 times

The yellow circle shows the video clip being dragged onto the timeline and I am trying to cut away to this shot right between 2 words in the dialogue. You can see where the cut point is in the waveforms, but you can't see the front edge of the clip that you're dragging down onto the timeline. So you don't know where it starts.

Now normally I have the CTI / playhead at the cutpoint and just do an insert. But in this case I don't want the audio to insert as well just the video.
Basically a manual edit is useless here unless you use the playhead to align your insert. Even if the thumbnail was translucent so you could see through it that would be a better option. I guess there's just no solution as this thread has been dormant for months now.

I can certainly understand the problem, but I thought I would post this anyway in case it helps anyone. The pic show a zoomed in view with a clip dragged from the Preview window. The clip thumbnail has not increased in size.

If the size of the audio track is increased you can move the thumbnail down and hopefully out of the way.

Upgraded from 16 to 17 studio and I have the same problem, it's really annoying and not found out where to turn this off. Zooming in is not a solution for me, it would be better to turn off if it's possible.

The "workaround" is to watch the mouse cursor—the beginning of the clip is in line with it's point.

Hello,

This thread is older, but still not resolved.

I am having the issue that my Thumbnail is HUGE compared to the timeline.
The thumnail spans over 5 video tracks in this case!
Blackmagic, can you please at least adjust the opacity to 50%?
It's very annoying.

Regards

I've never seen a thumbnail that size. Even with the Timeline at its smallest this is what I see.

The alternative to dragging the clip is F9 to insert at the Playhead, or Shift+F12 to append to the end of the Timeline. With the Speed Editor you have dedicated keys for Insert and Append.

Mine is the same size as this guys on my laptop, it's fine on the Desktop. Please change this, it's another one of those things that make Resolve very annoying for editing in the field, it's an unnecessary feature, at least give us the option

Hi! I know its now 2023. But is there a way now to switch off this annoying thumbnail thing? I know there are work arounds but that is just not the workflow i am fast and efficient with. Still hoping!

Yes PLEASE offer some options here! I've not experienced this kind of obstruction to where you're actually trying to place the clip on the timeline in any other NLE that offers drag and drop from the source monitor. Resolve is such a great editing experience aside from this that makes me never want to drag and drop from source.

Like even if the thumbnail was just moved ABOVE the cursor so you could see where the clip is going it would be better... but just DELETE IT ALL TOGETHER PLEASE. What gives... no one needs this.

Please get rid of this, it's one of the things that make Davinci a pain to use on laptops when you're editing in the field, it just obstructs way too much space on smaller screens and it provides no usefulness

Same here. I assumed there was a simple setting somewhere I was missing, based on how intrusive this "feature" is. But reading this thread? It's not me.

I suggested this change a while back on a mac laptop, then I went to a PC desktop and never dealt with the issue. I recently purchased the Mac Studio and am now in resolve and the issue is BACK!!! I actually believe this is an operating system issue. PC vs. Mac. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

I am definitely a PLUS + 1, also just upgraded to Resolve studio 18.6.4

Just give us an option to decide how big we want the thumbnail that we drag into the timeline.
