Resolve Studio 17 USB Dongle issue (Claims activation code)

PostTue Nov 10, 2020 1:27 am

Hi! I'm excited with the new version but when I am going to enter in Davinci Resolve Studio 17 it claims me to activate it with a code. I have a legal USB Dongle, I don't understand why it's not working, but I had read about it and that problem was present in past versions, specially beta versions, and this problem ran out when Blackmagic added a new version. I want to think that the solution is that simply, but I don't know if you are experimenting these things too. Please, report your problems here in order to alert Blackmagic of this issue.

I'm running Windows 10 x64 and I have working right now with Davinci Resolve Studio 16.3 Beta 3 without problems.

Thank you!

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

I am also having same problem as OP and when I run capturelogs it SAYS it put it on my desktop but it isn't. I've tried multiple times and looked in the DaVinci Resolve folder near as i can tell no file anywhere.

The situation is similar for me. The system I use macOS Catalina 10.15.17.
The Fusion Studio 17 Beta and DaVinci_Resolve_Studio_16.2.7_Mac is working fine.

For Windows users where CaptureLogs is not generating a log file, download this file:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/sj40qkat4ysnv ... e.zip?dl=0

Unzip the file. You will have a file called CaptureLogsOneDrive.bat

Copy this file to C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

Then run this file.

@Laszlo: Open Finder and navigate to /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve and run CaptureLogs.

Since you are using Catalina, you'll get an error message when you run CaptureLogs. You can ignore the error. A Resolve log file will still be created on your Desktop.

Send us the file.

If you moved your desktop to another folder or drive, the capturelogs are still placed in C:\Users\*Username*\Desktop

I also have a problem with the dongle. I have a MacbookPro with M1 processor for testing purposes. Davinci Resolve 17beta (for M1) is installed.
Unfortunately the dongle is not recognized. The bug report is attached.
Since I will return the computer immediately, I will not be able to try a solution. But I wanted to show the bug report anyway - maybe it will help to make the world a little better ;-)

If you haven't already seen this mentioned elsewhere, Resolve dongles are not currently supported on M1 Macs.

Again, Resolve dongles are NOT currently supported on M1 Macs.

The issue is being worked on.

I'm also not sure that Resolve 16.2.7 will work properly on an M1 Mac. Rosetta 2 might allow it to work. But that's a moot point if you are trying to use a Resolve dongle.

Hi,
Dwaine, just to check and make sure...

Version 17.1 works with Dongles on any other computer except M1 Macs.
Correct?

Thanks.

I thought 17.1 was only for M1 Macs, the 17 was for all other Macs.

Which means no version of 17.1 will work with a dongle.

No?

Very simply:
17.0 beta is all three platforms. Same as previous versions.
17.1 beta is mac only - both free and studio.

17.0 beta on mac is Intel native, as are previous versions. They run on M1 macs via the Rosetta 2 translation layer, so your mileage may vary, but it is not tested or meant to be run on M1 macs anyway.

17.1 beta on mac is a universal binary. It runs on both Intel and M1 macs natively. The M1 native code means that there are some kinks to be worked out - which, as Peter and Dwaine have observed, includes the license dongle support on M1 macs.

Put the file on a file sharing site and provide a link to the file here.

Since you are a new user, you probably can't post a URL. Put a space somewhere in the front part of the URL, so the system doesn't see it as a URL.

If you are a Mac M1 user, make sure you are using Resolve 17.1 beta 4, which addresses the dongle issue on M1 Macs.

Hi, trying to include a url to the logfile I created yesterday.

Have reinstalled Resolve 16 Studio and can finish a project for a client.

Would really like to make the 17 beta work with the dongle.
Just received the Speed Editor and have ten short films to complete this week.

@Kim: Not sure why you think you have a dongle issue? Resolve seems to be running, and not asking for an activation code.

It does seem to be upset with your obs-mac-virtualcam device. Whatever that is. If it's possible to disable that, you might try that and see if Resolve is any happier.

The Dongle issue I experienced was that all my clips in DR17 beta was covered with a watermark "Davinci Resolve Studio" with dots evenly spread out across the screen.

Disappeared when I went back to DR16.

Will try to figure out the (streaming software) OBS virtual cam weird issue thing

That would mean that you had the free version installed, and not the Studio version.

There are 2 separate versions. Having the free version installed, along with the dongle, does not give you Studio features. You need to specifically download and install a version that is labeled Studio.

Aha! That might possibly be embarrassingly true!
Have been trying to work this out for two days.
Been using the studio version for six years and just now most likely (probably, most certainly) installed the wrong version.

Will try to install the correct version.
If that works, I thank you and you will never hear from me again.

Don't tell anyone about this! :)

It appears that you have a counterfeit Resolve dongle.

Would recommend you return it to the place you purchased it from for a refund or proper dongle.

Hi Dwaine,
Thank you for your kind reply. That is very bad news since I paid nearly full price for it and I had no idea that counterfeit Resolve dongles even existed. All the packaging looked legit. First time in 20 years that got scammed...
I can try to return it however I will need some evidence that it is a counterfeit as the seller might well say that I damaged the dongle or something... Anything I could say to support my case ?
Cheers

If it works in the earlier betas and not in the final version, that's proof enough. BM is disabling counterfeit dongles from time to time when they hit the market. A damaged dongle wouldn't work at all.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Sorry to say you have a counterfeit Resolve dongle, which stopped working with Resolve version 16.2.

That would be why the last good log you have is from June of 2020, when you were using the free version of 16.2.3.

It was working on June 9.

It would appear from the launch attempts today, that the dongle is not detected. Are you sure it's plugged in? Did you move it to a different USB port? Is the LED on the dongle lighting up?

Yes, nothing changed. I turn on my computer today and received this message. Dongle light is green, as usual. I even tried different USB ports to check but still didn't work.
I need to fix this ASAP because I need to deliver a project soon.

In the View menu, select Device by container

Does the USB Dongle show up in the list? If it does, expand it. Does it look like this screen shot?

Hi Diogo

From your screenshot above, and from this conversation -
It was working on June 9.
It would appear from the launch attempts today, that the dongle is not detected.
it would appear that either the USB hardware (port/controller) is defective, or the dongle is defective.

If you have another computer with DaVinci Resolve Studio installed, please try the dongle there. If that fails, the dongle is likely defective. You will need to work with with the reseller directly for further follow up. If the dongle is indeed detected, your PC/motherboard manufacturer may have a troubleshooting guide, including updating USB drivers, power-cycling the system and/or changing BIOS/system settings. Note that these are specific to each manufacturer and we are unable to recommend more specific solutions.

If you are still unable to continue working in the short term, and are unable to access an alternative license, please consider uninstalling the Studio version and installing the free DaVinci Resolve to finish your project.

Hi, the USB port is working fine, the dongle is not working properly I tried in my notebook.
I bought it a few years back from your website, so not through any reseller (as I remember, not 100% sure on that). I am unable to move back to the free version because I use many tools unavailable there. I hope you are able to help me out with this. I am a paid customer that bought the software, not the hardware. You created the hardware so people don´t use pirate software. But this is not my fault. I am in a professional environment with many things going on, relying on software that I do love, that I paid for, and because of a fault in your hardware I can´t deliver the videos to my clients. Would you say this is fair? I live in Brazil and will take some time until I can get it fixed. Please give me another solution. Like an Activation Key or something.

Thanks in advance,

Diogo

As BMD always sells via a reseller you need to contact them. They will likely required proof of purchase or at the least info so they can see when u did and they can test then replace the dongle.
