Using TWO Ultrastudio monitor adapters ?

PostWed Jan 13, 2021 2:01 am

I wonder if somebody can give advice about the following.

Question: If I'm using a Mac Mini M1 (which provides 2 built-in outputs), can I add TWO Blackmagic UltraStudio Monitor 3G devices to get four outputs in total?
Assume I'd be running 1080p30 - nothing too extreme in terms of resolution etc.

I know the M1 only allows for two "graphics" outputs, but these Ultastudio outputs would be "video" outputs which my software (ProPresenter) can address separately.

(Related question: I assume the SDI and HDMI outputs on the Ultrastudio Monitor are NOT independently addressable - they will always output the same signal - true?)

Thanks in advance.

If you are referring to Resolve: no, only one is supported. And then, one device will carry the same signal on HDMI and SDI.

Thanks for confirming that the SDI and HDMI outputs will carry the same signal.

I'm not using resolve (the application is live presentation using ProPresenter). But I'm wondering if running two Ultrastudio Monitors together, on a mac mini, will work from a hardware point of view. In terms of displayport bandwidth etc.

you could possibly use an ultrastudio HD mini which has 2 outputs

But I understand that Tom wants two different signals.

Yes, I need two distinct output signals and it looks like the ultrastudio HD mini can only deliver the same signal to both outputs.

Uli, thanks for the pointer about the Thunderbolt hub - looks very promising, and the video gives helpful info about bandwidth etc.

Has anyone found the answer to this? Because 2x UltraStudio Monitor 3G would be much cheaper than the Decklink Duo 2 with an External Enclosure

Budget is essential here.
I also need to use it for propresenter to show 4x unique displays. Two can come from the Mac Mini M1 natively, and then I'm hoping that the other two can be handled by the 2x UltraStudio Monitor 3G

ProPresenter supports NDI (with native support on M1), so instead of relying on SDI you could use NDI which is way easier and in most cases cheaper. NDI and "cases like yours" are made for each other.
Were are you sending signal to? You just need to find out if your destination supports NDI input and then all what you need is simple 1gig network (between source and destination). For HD cases simplest gigabit router is enough for few HD streams (eg. reliable 5).

Regarding SDI solution. If ProPresenter can see 2xBM cards as unique (which it most likely can), then there is no reason why M1 Mac can't handle 2 units. Mini M1 has 2xTB buses, so there is plenty bandwidth available for TB connections in case of HD.
Just make sure that UltraStudio Monitor 3G works wit M1 machines.

NDI is a viable alternative. Nobe Omniscope is offering it when running on a separate machine and it worked without problems during my tests.

Hi all, is it possible for a M1 iMac to connect TWO Ultrastudio monitor adapers ? Any final conclusion ?

What is it you're trying to do with two UltraStudios? Resolve itself can only address one.

Exactly, that's the question. You can connect two, but how to you want to use two?

I think the OP wants to feed multiple destinations using ProPresenter or similar software (very popular in Worship and Academic presentation situations) rathe than Resolve, Media Express etc.

I think the question is probably better aimed at the ProPresenter community.

AIUI CasparCG (a popular open source) is fine with multiple TB video output devices for its use case (it's common to find 4 outputs on some CasparCG set-ups - Key, Fill and 2 x Full screen)

If Mac sees both devices I don’t see a reason why they can’t be used in app which supports multiple devices.

I have used one UltraStudio Mini and one nameless USB -> HDMI device with OBS without any issue.

Thanks. Exactly, I want to use two Ultrastudio Monitors in ProPresenter in order to add one extra destination.

Why not just get an HDMI splitter? That'll give you more than HDMI output for very little money.

Well, I understood he may want to direct different content to those outputs.
If not, of course yours is the easiest and cheapest solution.

So, I tested this by connecting both an UltraStudio Monitor 3G and an older UltraStudio Mini Monitor to one Intel iMac. They are both accessible by the system controls and I can see and choose either one in DR, but of course not both of them there.
Please understand that MacOS is not seeing these as additional displays. These are video I/O devices for precise monitoring. Your application will only see and use these if it is programmed for that.
