3rd party, 5.1 USB audio interface for Resolve.

PostWed Aug 05, 2020 8:50 am

Has anyone successfully used a 3rd-party external USB interface to feed 5.1 straight out of the Fairlight DAW in DaVinci Resolve? I have a requirement to do this from a laptop version, i.e. without the accelerator card and SX-interface in circuit, which would be a more static set-up in the studio. It's a client request for a fast, mobile set-up. Candidates would seem to include Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 USB Audio Interface, 3rd Gen at one end of the price range (£380 GBP) and the Apogee Quartet USB Audio Interface at the other (£1,220GBP) - that's quite a price span! (Definitely space for a Blackmagic product imho.)

Neil, I'd like to know what your experience was with the hardware build-outs you indicated. I am also looking for a solution to feed 5.1 straight out of Fairlight but that seems impossible without the CC-2 accelerator and SX-interface. Any recommendation on the integration with an iMac Pro 2017 would be appreciated.

The simple way is to extract the audio from the HDMI output on a BMD UltraStudio monitoring device, or hook it up directly to a surround receiver.

It works on all UltraStudio/DeckLink devices, including the cheapest ones.

Roger, I have the DeckLink mini monitor 4K. It has 1 HDMI and 1 SDI. The HDMI is connected to my reference monitor. To do what you are suggesting, and since the HDMI is already used, could I get a BMD SDI to HDMI converter, and then use a HDMI to a 5.1 audio converter, or what do you suggest?

I use the fantastic HDLink Pro 3D. Of course BMD has long since discontinued it and it's 2K only.

Many HDMI audio de-embedders has passthrough HDMI. I would look for something like that.

That HDLink Pro 3D looks interesting. Since it is discontinued and 2K only, is there anything equivalent to it that has newer tech (i.e. 4K) and will work with DeckLink and of course Resolve?
