Cannot Import H265 clips From Canon R5 into Resolve 17?

Hi All -

So I am not able to import h265 clips from a Canon R5 into the latest version of Resolve on a mac (Big Sur). Check the screen capture below (it's the Spanish version). Also, they aren't visible in the Storage area panel either.

Notice how the "Principal" (which means "Master" in English)turns to red if that's any indication:

Any ideas what can be wrong?

Yup

OK.

It's likely you'll need the Studio version for that media. If you care to share a short clip, we can test to make sure.

H265 should be supported on mac in the free version.

Also, (at least for me), when video codec is unsupported, it still loads the audio track ...

Not all flavors, like 10 bit 422, which needs Studio.

It'd be nice to have an updated support codec list for R17 ...
Even the one I found for R16 is outdated and doesn't reflect the latest R16 release.

I would rather they focus their efforts on building - the documentation can lag a bit.

Sure but as I said, even the list for R16 isn't up to date, so it'd be nice if the doc for R17 is updated before R18 :p

My preference would be for same time. Completed and accurate docs for 17 once it goes RTM.

Not exactly true, in my experience: I am able to open and transcode 10 bit 422 on an iMac 2015 which runs Mojave and R16 free, but not on an iMac 2019 running Mojave and R16 free...

I have been running DR16 Studio on a Windows 10 PC and for some months producing 30 minute videos clips of XF-HEFC in UHD at 50p on a Canon XF705. Other than some jerkiness from time to time rendered at HD , no problem. Just Purchased a MacBook Pro with M1 processor. Installed DR17 Studio. Problem....
It would not load / install my project Archives. or read the media on Quicktime. After many hours od surfing came across a |Download on an Apple Canadian site which to install "Professional Codecs". on a Mac. Wow, never knew about this before, not been necessary on Windows. AND after installation i Quicktime will read the HEFC clips. Save them as a move.....work in DV17 then but that's not a solution.jSorted i thought, but no. I have tried everything I know ( i am fairly new to this game) i cannot get DV17 Studio to to load XF-HEFC clips, its ok with XF-AVC. Doesn't solve the Archive problem.
What is the problem? No way will i "Upgrade to 17 on my PC. it works on 16.
Have i loaded the wrong version of DV 17 for an M! MAc?
Help please, can't get Apple to take the Macbook back (fully spec'ed as it is) but I bought it to use DV17!!!!

Can you upload a short sample of the clips you can't read?

You say "DV17" but did you use the 17.1.1 version ? 17.0.x versions are not for M1.

I have installed Version 17.1.1 Build 9.

A workaround i have tried. (not for past project archive). If i open the HEVC clips in Qucktime, then save them as a (.mov), import those clips into DV17, they work. The files are a little larger than the original MXF files. I have not evaluated if there is a loss of quality.

It look like i may have installed the wrong version Not the M1 ( (17.1.1 Build 9). I will have to see if i can locate it. Should this be possible? Shouldnt it bounce at in stall time ??

No, the M1 can run legacy software by Rosetta2. But it'll be slower.

not a M1 but plays well on my main cMP in 17.1.1 studio

Plays OK on a MacBook Air M1 in the Studio version. On my iMac too.

Thank You Uli. I now know there is nothing wrong withe file. It works on your M1, so may have an installation problem. Maybe "Rosetta" got in the way, it was mention when i was installing my Adobe Photo suite of programs but not Davinici Software. I will wait tuntil tomorrow then go for a re insall. Unlees i hear of anything else to try.
ISEE OTHERS HAVE DOWNLOADED THE FILE BUT NO ONE SAYING THEY HAVE A PROBLEM!!!!

Resolve 17.1.1 windows 10: No problems at all

Update on DaVinci Resolve 17 STUDIO not loading HEVC clip

My new MacBook Pro comes with M1 MacOS Big SUR, 11.2.3 Memory 16 GB Storage 2TB.
DR17 Studio. Version 17.1.1 Build 9“Get Info” shows KIND (Universal), Size Installed 2,607,809,259 bytes
As far as I am able to see, nobody on the Forum who has installed my sample file is on Big Sur 11.2.3.

Further information.
I have SPOKEN to a person at Canon Professional Services because I could not download the “XFUtility” software for use with Big Sur. He confirmed that so far Canon had only updated the software for DSLR’s. The update needed for Camcorders is in the pipeline.
I have installed “ Final Cut Pro trail”. It installs my HEVC clips and runs perfectly. Except that you will have noticed that my sample file needed Canon LUT3 to colour correct. No Big Sur LUTs available yet from Canon!!
BUT I do not want to go through the pain of learning new software, and it does not run on Windows 10, my main platform. The Macbook is for use when travelling.

So it seems to me, that my problem is the phrase “Intel Platforms”.

I Emailed Blackmagic Support last Monday, I had a confirmation, but no response yet.

It would be comforting to hear that someone else has the same problem and it is not just my installation. My conclusion is that DR17 and Canon Software is not ready for my installation yet.

Problem Resolved.
Problem not being able to install HEVC files on MacBook M1 using Big Sur
an Update to DR 17.2 was released today. I installed and it fixed my problem. There was a large list of issues that it stated it had addressed.
