Glow and drop shadow effect resolution

I like to add glow and drop shadow effects to PNGs but what I've found is that these effects get their "domain" restricted to the resolution of the PNG (as shown in the attachment). I'd like it to spread into the larger image. Is there a setting I can change or something?

Cropping bigger is the quickest way to do this.
There are probably other ways as well with setting domains/canvasses etc but that's something I never quite grasped, so I always use crop bigger for situations like these.

This is my workaround as well but it does add a lot of time if you are working with a few downloaded images. I just tried doing the same thing in after effects and it works as expected. I wonder if there's a way to do it in Fusion without the hassle.

Just tried something and it worked. You can increase the domain of the effect if you merge the PNG with a transparent background node (alpha set to 0) before adding the glow effect.

How is merging with a transparent background easier and/or quicker than cropping bigger?
(I'm glad you figured it out, I just don't see how using is one node is less efficient than using two of them)

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant by cropping bigger. Do you mean exporting your PNG file with a larger transparent area? If so, it's easy if it's your own image that you created but if you downloaded the image then you'd have to open up something like Photoshop or GIMP and edit it. That's more work.
