Fade in / out

PostWed Mar 10, 2021 9:59 pm

I'm new to DR but in the Title Page > Effects Library I don't see Fade in Or Fade Out listed. Is it in a different library in DR? Can you only access Fade in and out in the Cut Page? Thank you

Just grab the fade handle at the beginning or end of the clip and drag it where you want.
The handles will appear when you hover over the clip near the edge.

As a new user, your first course of action should be to complete some Resolve training. The Beginner's Guide and Advanced Editing are an excellent groundwork to get you moving smoothly. ;)

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your graphic. How do I create the "Fade Handle"? In Edit Page, do I click Effect Library > choose which effect? I don't see Fade listed.
Thank you.

It's automatically on every clip. It will appear as you move your mouse over the end of the clip

Fade In / Fade Out are Transitions. You find they inside Transitions library as at all NLEs.

Fade in/out haven't been in the Effects Library for some time. You add them exactly as Mike Warren has shown.
And yes, they work in the Edit and Fairlight pages.
If you look at the Trim dropdown menu you will also see Fade in and Out options using the Playhead.
If you do a search in the manual for Fade In you will find a list of instances relating to Fades.
This something you should be doing for yourself.
You should at least look at BMs training video "Introduction to Editing".

Fade In / Out is Cross Dissolve transition on the beginning or at the end of clip.

Pulling the sliders is also possible, but eager is looking for a fade in / out in the effect library. Pulling on the sliders is not always practical.

Hi Mike,

Brilliant! Your technique works perfectly!! Thank you so very, very much.

I grabbed Cross Fade 0dB. The dB can’t represent decibels like in sound, right? What does dB mean in DR Effects?

What’s the difference between Cross Fade +3dB -vs- -3dB -vs- 0dB?

Have you found Cross Fade 0dB to be your “go to” choice when applying fades?

How does Cross Fade differ from Cross Dissolve visually?

I’m trying to ascertain which Effect or Transition is recommend for which instances or desired effect in DR?
There’s a lot of wonderful choices for which I’m so grateful to the DR developers for.

Thank you again.

A Cross Dissolve it what you apply to the picture. A Cross Fade is what is applied to an audio track. Just different terminology between the motion picture and audio industries for what is essentially the same thing.
The db does mean decibels as those values are shown for Audio crossfades which is why they are in the Audio Transitions section of the Effects Library. They are not shown for Video cross dissolves which are in the Video Transitions section because the db scale does not apply to visuals.

The db values refer to the volume of the audio at the cross point of the transition between clips. Personally I would use the 0db one (highlighted with the red marker) which is also known as an Equal Power crossfade. It all depends on the audio material you are using. Just try them all and see which one gives you the desired end result.

If you have several layers of composited video, my favorite method is to put a “Solid” generator on a top video track, trim it to the required length and keyframe the opacity.

Apply Dip to Cross Dissolve transition on the top track instead. Set color to black and set Start Ratio to 50 for using at the beginning of clip . For using at the end of clip set End Ratio to 50.

You people are awesome! Some of your suggestions will require more of my trial and error but I so appreciate your insights.

I’m almost mastering the Lower Third Title creation using the Effects Library and Inspector tools.

I’ve uploaded 2 jpgs to share how it’s not replicating what I’ve watched on video tutorials.

1 – I can’t “enlarge” or stretch the duration of the Title I’ve dragged down to the TimeLine like they can in the video tutorial.

2 – I can type in text under Inspector > Fusion but it never appears anywhere but in the title box I typed in; it never displays the font size or color I chose. In the DR video tutorial, you can see in The Viewer the characters he’s typing in one at a time; I never see that when I type in text in the Text box in Inspector.

3 – I closed DR to start form scratch but now when I select Lower 3rd Simple Vertical 2 Lines and grab it with the mouse and drag it to the Timeline but it won’t drop on to a separate Video Track (V2). Is there a trick to this?

4 – In the video tutorial, he instructs you to scroll down to the Secondary Line but that option never appears in my Fusion (under Inspector). I scrolled all the way down and the bottom of that Fusion box lists Main Light Controls.

There must be some step(s) I’m missing but I’ve re-watched the video and don’t see what I’m missing.

Thank you again for all your patience, understanding and kind help.

For your 1st issue with not being able to lengthen the Title, try zooming into the Timeline more by clicking the zoom + button a few times. You should then be able to stretch it out to the length you want.

With the issue you are having not seeing the Lower Third, you have to have the Playhead around the middle of the Title to see the text, it is animated and starts at the beginning with the text not visible then animates in.

It also looks like you might not have your clips all the way to the left at the beginning of the Timeline, since you don't see anything in the viewer and your Playhead is at the start.
