Copy Subtitle Track Style and/or Track Style Presets

PostThu Aug 27, 2020 12:53 pm

– copy subtitle track styles and paste them to other tracks, even in other timelines

– modify/change the preset for subtitle track style

– create a preset library of subtitle track stlyes

Hello

All though this isn't the best way, until BM update the titling system it works.

Create a subtitle with the settings required and save it out as .srt. You can then use this as a template.

Alternatively you can export as an fcpxml 1.5 however this will import onto a video track. You can convert the fcpxml 1.5 at subsimple back to .srt.

You can also save a project template with subtitle settings and then open it as read only.

Hope that helps.

+1 ... definitely want/need to be able to save (import and export) track style settings without workarounds.

Adding subtitles today, I was surprised to find I couldn't copy the style.

Thank you for the suggestion. I gave it a go, but only a very limited part of the style is actually exported.

Reviewing the resulting .srt file in a text editor, shows that things like font, alignment, kerning, stroke, etc, are all discarded. When importing this file and using it as a template, those elements are (as one would expect) missing.

HOWEVER

We would prefer a way to carry ALL of our established styles into new projects. For instance, we have titles, subtitles, graphics, logos, ids, sfx, etc that get re-used all the time (each client / show has its own set). Sure would be nice to have some kind of package or preset we can define then load up into a project and have everything ready. Right now, we have some predefined projects we use as templates, but there must be a better way.

For what its worth Matt, you're right, there is indeed a better way... you can keep all reused graphic elements, logos, ids (and sfx) etc in a Power Bin. That way they're accessible in every project. Also for sfx, you can stick them in a Sound Library where you can access them from any project. For titles you can build them in Fusion and save them as templates (again accessible in any project).

Yes, thanks.

I was thinking of something simple like a project template or preset that had everything for that client / show loaded in it.

We dont really want all the elements accessible in all projects (client IP concerns, too much media in the project bins, the chance of clips or styles getting modified, etc)

Answering very late here, but I tried that and it gave me bugs in resolve, look here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=120966

Haven't tried it in Resolve 17 until now, maybe it was fixed, but it didn't appear in any of the the release notes, as far as I can remember.

Here's a work around for multi language jobs:
Just found out that if you have a timeline with a subtitle track, you duplicate that timeline and then drag & drop a .srt File with a different language onto the existing subtitle track at the exact same position (snapping turned on) it will format the new srt with the underlying track style.

Andy Weimer wrote:...it will format the new srt with the underlying track style.

Should be no need for snapping etc, Andy ... the 'Track Style' is (as the name suggests) attached to the track... even if you delete everything in the existing track, but not the track itself, any caption / SRT that you add to the existing track will/should use the already existing track style.

The problem is that theres no way to simply copy an existing style to a different track, either on the same timeline and/or to a different timeline or project.

For what its worth, I use an empty template project for all my edits, with that template project containing an empty timeline that I've already configured with a Subtitle Track added and my specific Track Style settings already applied to that track. If, like me, your subtitles need the exact same Track Style for every project (and/or you have other specific settings you always like to use for your timelines, like track naming conventions etc) then its a worthwhile and timesaving workflow.

Still, being able to save and recall and/or import and export Track Style presets seems like such a trivial and obvious addition that I'm hopeful that BMD will throw it in to some minor point release at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later.

How is this not already a function? We can copy track styles for literally everything else!

HUGE time waster currently if you have multiple timelines for one project that need the same settings - CHANGED - mid project. ie: client wants a change to the font size in burned in captions for social media. We have a set of 6 videos to change and we can't just copy/paste.

Then they want to change size, font face, font color, and kerning as well as the position on screen. One setting is almost the same as copy/paste, but with multiple settings like that it can get exceedingly tedious.

Yes .. nothing has changed as yet in this regard. But as noted, theres been activity with subtitles in v18b1, it's not impossible that more tweaks are planned.

When we build a long form project, often we work on it as multiple small timelines that are subsequently compiled for review (by scene, reel, act, etc). In this case, each timeline needs the exact same setup. Being able to copy the track setup (and fonts, styles, etc) would help a lot.

Set individual presets, text positions and intuitively edit between regions.

From the Resolve Studio 18 release notes.

I will not update in the next weeks, so I can't check, but this sounds like what we wanted. Maybe someone who updated to 18 can check? Thanks in advance!

Sadly not. No change to the status quo.
Still zero ability to copy/paste/load/save/import/export or otherwise effectively manage Track Style settings.

Set individual presets
This is merely saying you can manually set different styles for different subtitle regions on an active subtitle track, so when you add subtitles to those regions, or move subtitle between them, the region specific style settings will apply. You can 'name' the regions in that active subtitle track ... but you still cant 'save' and / or 'manage' those regions and their associated settings in any meaningful way ... you cant copy and paste them to different subtitle regions or different subtitle tracks in the same timeline, let alone use them in different timelines, different projects, different libraries, different computers etc etc etc ... you can only manually type in all the settings again and again and again, as and whenever needed.

The only workaround remains to set up a template project with a template timeline with all the subtitle tracks, regions and styles that you might need, already defined, then export that template project so that you can use it for every new project wherever you are.

Hey guys
Its very easy guys. Atleast the way I did it for me. Import your srt file. Drag to time line and align. Select your 1st subtitle. Open the style tab on Inspector panel and setup your font, text size, alignment, color, shadow, bkg and all that good stuff.

Thereafter highlight the rest of the subs from the back or right to left (for some weird reason it only works this way).

In your Inspector click on the caption tab.
Directly under the text you will see a check box saying "use track Style"
Check this and all your subtitles will copy style of 1st subtitle.

I have attached a screen grab as well.

There after just minor changes if you wish to make them look better but you dont have to change all manually.

If you want to make any changes globally to the style just go back to the 1st one make changes and it will apply to all.

I hope this helps!!

No, unfortunately it doesn't help, Doug, you've misunderstood the request. Appreciate the attempt tho. :)
