Pocket 6k Pro + DJI RS2

PostFri Mar 26, 2021 4:56 pm

Hi,

Just wanted to see if anyone is using the DJI RS2 with the Pocket 6k Pro and what their experience has been like.

I’m considering buying the RS2 and ideally I want to use it with the camera, battery grip and a Sigma 18-35 and I just wondered how easy it would be to balance that kind of setup.

Any feedback/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

It works well in the setup pictured below, but I haven't yet tried it with Sigma 18-35 or the battery grip. I have them both, but just having too much fun working with this. Remote start/stop, follow focus and being able to lock the gimbal with the front button pressed are very nice things to have. I updated from P4K + Ronin-S + Sigma 18-15 and feels like a big step up overall.

Thanks for the feedback, sounds promising.

I can't see your picture, it seems to be blocked for me.

If you do try it with it with the Sigma and/or battery grip, I'd really love to hear how you get on. I'm also curious whether the focus motor will work with the Sigma 18-35 with it being a stills lens where the focus ring turns past infinity.

Thanks again and enjoy your new set up.

Sorry the image wasn't working, I fixed it now. I'll report back when I test it with Sigma, I'm also curious to see how the focus motor works with it. When the endpoints are calibrated manually there should not be a problem.

Jukka, your setup makes me think that the RS2 may be good with my BMPCC4K and a SLR Magic APO 25mm T2.1 prime or possibly the Tokina CinemaATX 11-20mm T2.9. I’ve long favored the RS2 but wasn’t sure about the capability to use it with my gear for narrative work. Looks like it’s feasible with only the need to keep shots fairly short (unless I added the Easyrig).

You may find it otherwise, at the expense of your back and knees. Long shots or short ones, if it's too heavy, it's too heavy. My gimbal adventures were with lighter gear than what you're contemplating, and even that was no fun. I eventually bought handles for it, which seemed to improve stability and made it easier to manage, but also made it heavier.

Where gimbals work pretty well is close ups on moving subjects, because the human in the picture distracts the viewer from all the lousy operating which quickly sets in. I'd also give up any thought of pulling focus. You want wide lenses and an aperture which gives you a lot of DOF, so you can't lose focus despite your best efforts.

And are you sure you can get an Easyrig to work with all this? The physics of Easyrig/gimbal seem like they'd be all out of whack. Steadicam was (still is?) making an arm and vest for one of the Ronins, you might want to check that out.

Will do and thanks for the advice. Sounds like I might be better off using a SLR Magic 10mm mFT (or short Laowa) than my heavier lenses.

From the B&H Photo Overview:
“The Steadicam Steadimate-S Aero 15 Arm & Aero Vest Kit is a body-worn stabilizer system that lets you integrate compatible handheld motorized gimbal stabilizers. It supports the DJI Ronin-S and Zhiyun-Tech Crane 2 stabilizers. The kit includes the entry-level Aero 15 stabilizer arm, an Aero vest, and the Steadimate-S mechanical gimbal collar and base for attaching the handheld stabilizer. The gimbal collar secures to the post of the handheld stabilizer, allowing the stabilizer to rest on the arm and vest for easier and steadier use. The Aero 15 arm features a payload of 15 lb.

The Aero 15 is a beginner-friendly 2-stage stabilizer arm offering tool-free adjustment of the carbon fiber center post...”

This seems sufficient and capable without breaking the bank. Any further thoughts?

Rick,

Check out Tilta's new Steadicam system for the RS2. It's called The Float.

Brian, thanks; looks like it takes a larger weight and allows longer reach than the Steadimate S 15. But some optional purchases would be required presumably including counterweights. Looks good though.

I got the Float couple days ago and first impression is really good. Really good reach and smooth transition from low angle to high angle. Batteries works as counter balance and they power the gimbal.

I balanced the Pocket 6k Pro (without the battery grip) and the Sigma 18-35 on my Flycam HD 3000 (which is a cheaper version of the Gildecam). The entire set-up, including the Flycam is about 2.5kg and I find that I tire fairly quickly.

The RS2 weighs a little more than the Flycam but I presume I'll tire less quickly with it being motorised and the fact I can grip it with both hands. Is that the case or am I making the wrong assumption here. Sorry if that’s a silly question, but I’ve not used a motorised gimbal before so any feedback appreciated. Thanks

Thanks TeemuV for sharing that picture. How has your experience been with it so far? Thinking of picking up that combination for the 6K Pro as well and finding very few reviews online, probably since they are so hard to get still.

Re: Pocket 6k Pro + DJI RS2

I've been using the P6k Pro and RS2 combo for a couple months now and love it. I've had the RS2 since it came out and have been using my P4k on it doing everything from walking interviews, live concerts, home walkthroughs, and action shots. I've used both combos with heavier lenses like the Sigma 18-35 with no issues at all. The RS2 will even let you pull focus on that lens using the internal focus motors, without the need for the additional follow focus motor. Just change the trigger wheel to control the lens motor, and away you go.

The first thing I would recommend to anyone using a single handled gimbal like the RS2 or Zhiyun Crane series is to get a second handle for stability and ease of use. I personally have been using the Zhiyun TransMount Mini Dual Grip because it's lightweight and very portable.

Another issue to solve is battery life. Though the P6k does have much better battery duration, I still don't like having to change batteries if I can avoid it. I have been using a Weipu to NP-F adaptor that I mount on the briefcase side handle attachment in the back of the RS2. Since this cable doesn't allow for full gimbal freedom, I just keep the internal NP-F inside the camera and pull the Weipu connector off when I need full rotation for a shot or 2.

As for weight - When I was still using the Zhiyun Crane 2 and Crane 2S I had a neck strap attached with a clamp right under the pan motor that would let me rest the gimbal using the bottom tripod against my stomach between takes. I'm sure something similar could be had for the RS2, but I have built up the strength and endurance over time to the point where I don't feel the need to set the gimbal down, except for after 30-45 minute shots, which are obviously pretty rare unless I'm filming a live concert.

I highly recommend the P6k + RS2 combo if you are willing to work around it's (and pretty much any other small gimbals) small limitations.

I have a Ronin S that I use with the 6k Pro and a Ronin RSC2 that I use with the PC 4k. Both work quite well to give you that floating gimble look. The Ronin s + 6k does wear me out pretty quickly however. I use both with focus motors and moderate length and weight lenses. I also mount them in cages.

the pro package includes the focus motor and the raven eye (tracking)
only the 3D focus (continius focus) is extra paid.

Is the Ronin RS-2 a big step up from the Ronin-S? I see it's lighter...

From everything I have read the RS2 is a much nicer and more capable gimbal than the RS. I bought the RS before the RS2 was released. The difference between the gimbals was not enough for me to buy another gimbal.

I just put a battery in the camera. A half hour is more than enough time for me to run around holding that thing.

This send's power to the RS2 or get's power from? How does it connect to the RS2?

It does not have a connection with the RS2. You put a small vlock or gold mount battery on there and then you have 2 dtap and 2 lemo outputs to power stuff. I'm powering my Pocket 6k, a Nucleus motor and a Teradek transmitter.

It also helps balancing the camera by adding weight underneath and moving the center of gravity.
