Buy BMPCC 6K Pro Now or Wait?

PostTue Mar 30, 2021 1:38 pm

Hey everyone,

Regarding the LCD blue tint and some ND filter issues...

Should I buy the BMPCC 6K Pro now or wait?

My local dealer has stock but I am not sure if there is
a software fix for the blue screen issue.

Granted not all units are affected the same way.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Craig

I am hoping they come out with a software fix in the next few days...

Fingers crossed.

I've been playing around with mine for the last 8-10 days now. No footage yet to post and I did see the difference in color from the screen to the EVF.

There are two things already well documented. I was not really prepared for how much these things would change my relationship to the camera.... how quickly and organically I work with it.

For years I've talked about shooting Leica ranger finder still cameras. How they just became an extension of your eye. The 6KPro is a step in that direction.

Having built-in ND's will change the way I work. It gives a level of spontaneity where you concentrate on the scene as opposed to the technique. The brighter screen is another game changer for me. Not having to bring a field monitor is really great.

While I'm sure there might be times where I'll build this camera up, it's best features encourage a smaller build. I like that. More about the image/scene less about the camera.

Yes I'm confident that the team at Blackmagic will come up with a solution for the cool screen. Glad I didn't wait.

As the comedian, Dave Chapelle once said...,

"Never be the first to do anything. its always a terrible story of struggle and heartbreak".

If you are relying on this camera to be perfect for a big client shoot I would go with something less new. I waited a year to get the P4K and waited a year before getting the P6k to see how the bugs get worked out.

My A cam is the Sony A7S III and I also own the BMPCC 4K...

So I wouldn't be stuck, although I would like to avoid any hassles.

I would wait if you can.

Personally I have learned my lesson and will not buy another Blackmagic product early again.

Buy BMPCC 6K Pro Now or Wait?

PostTue Mar 30, 2021 7:58 pm

If you’re not stuck in the sense that you have a planned shoot that can use the additional camera, it may be prudent to wait until the next firmware update for the BMPCC6K Pro. Hoping that arrives shortly.

Still a difficult decision to delay when vendors have inventory now. The BMPCC4K went from available to waiting several months as it gained on popularity. The same trajectory may befall the BMPCC6K Pro when all signs say “buy.”

Buying the camera now does give you time to become familiar with the camera and the codecs as well as how it performs as well as how images look in DaVinci Resolve. This really is best done with extensive testing given that the Colour Science Gen 5 presumably is new; the good news is that is likely easier to work with than the Colour Science Gen 4 in the BMPCC4K.

Looking forward to having the same Colour Science across the Pockets and the URSA Minis as much as that is possible.

The think you can count on is that they're paying really close attention. I think that it's going to come out really well. They want you to succeed. At least as far as cameras go it really is a good time to be a filmmaker.

Gen 5 color science is available for the BMPCC 4k in Davinci Resolve right now.

You shoot in Gen 4 raw and Davinci Converts to Gen 4 or Gen 5 when you shoot raw and edit in Davinci.

I’ll wait for the next 4K in a box form factor similar to the Komodo or zcam.

I sold my p4K excited about this camera but I've been hearing many complaints about issues with it, so I decided to wait until things clear up. Thankfully it is not something I currently need for my work so no rush.

For the price, it is an unbeatable camera. You won't be disappointed by the images that it can capture.

Craig, you may want to update the camera firmware from the BMD Support page unless it’s already the latest version. Good to hear the screen looks good. There will be a new update hopefully later this month but no guarantee on the timing.

That’s the latest designed for the Pocket cameras. You’ll want to apply 7.3 when available. If you use the latest Resolve 17.1, you may update the BRAW release. Details are on the BMD Support page.

I am going to pass on the 6k though it looks good- internal NDs, brighter screen etc. They are an innovative company so god knows what they will come up with next.

I would like a bit more dynamic range (though it is pretty good at the moment), two mini XLR ports, a box form factor, flexible mount options, and SDI out.
