HDMI to SDI 3G converter with 12G Video Assist

PostWed Apr 07, 2021 12:54 pm

Hey guys/girls,

Forgive me for the amateur-ish questions but hey- I'm an amateur :)

I have a BMPCC4K and a Video Assist 7" 12G monitor. I want to record using the VA (connected to T5 SSD) in RAW codec- as you know, VA only accepts RAW codec with SDI signals.

I'm looking at getting a Blackmagic HDMI to SDI converter but it is 3G and my monitor is 12G. I'm thinking this should work given the extra bandwidth of the VA 12G, but I'm not entirely sure so here I am with my concerns.

I'll be shooting in HD (1080) at 24 - 60 fps. I'm concerned about possible sync issues given the speed differences.

Am I worried about nothing here?

Thanks.

the pocket 4k/6k has only INTERNAL BRAW (CFast2.0 or USB-C to your T5)
the HDMI out delivers not a RAW signal!

and the VA records BRAW over HDMI from the sigma or S1H

you can't record BRAW external when the camera out does not deliver it!

Ok, but do you have to keep using exclamation points? Anyway, please don't answer that because I won't be reading your rude reply.

The mini and micro converters will only convert REC709 broadcast signals.. So great that the Videoassist will record BRAW but it wont give you any more info then prores or dnxhd as the converter will not send anything better then normal broadcast standard.. So there is no extra RAW info.. ;)

IMO it's pointless to record BRAW unless the camera supports RAW output and has a DIRECT connection to the VA and being supported by the VA...

Also, the BMPCC 4K camera only outputs a HD 1080p 10-bit YUV video signal, to be used primarily for monitoring. When connected to a pan ATEM Mini, it changes the output to a Rec709 broadcast type signal that has more saturation to be used for live streaming. The camera can only record BRaw internally. You can record a BRaw signal internally to the camera media, and record a ProRes 1080p file to the VA 12G.
