Color Management for HDR 10 in Davinci Resolve 17

PostMon Apr 12, 2021 9:38 pm

Hi...
I'm using the studio version of Davinci Resolve 17, editing a film shot on an LG V40 phone, which is H.265, and I shot in HDR10. I'm confused as to the proper settings in color management. Everything almost looks like raw files. Can't find anything in the manual, other than I see support for HDR, HDR10 and HDR10+. and so I'm assuming I have some appropriate settings available to me? This is a two hour film, so I'm trying to get these settings straight so I don't have to grade every clip. ;) Any help would be so appreciated.. Thanks in advance. Stay safe out there.

Peace

My monitor supports HDR. I'm just confused about the settings in my color management page.

My signature should have my desktop before the laptop... I don't use the laptop for editing at all, just for messing around a bit, but not for any real work... My monitor is the LG 27UL650.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't think you will have HDR capabilities unless you add a Decklink card or the equivalent. Without this, it won't matter what capabilities your monitor might have.

There is a checkbox in Project settings - Color management: "Display HDR on viewers if available". I don't have an HDR capable gui monitor so I can't test this but it might help OP.

Questions remain the same: do you have a decklink card?

Also, the monitor's HDR400 certification is barely enough for...khm...semi-true 400 nit mastering (kinda poor blacks)...for a 1000 nits master you'd have to watch the scopes very carefully.

To the OP:
Unfortunately, you are finding yourself in the same position that anyone who wants to start working with HDR in any meaningful finds themself in. In order to work with an HDR workflow, you will have to buy a Decklink card or the equivalent. You will also need a monitor which is a true 10 bit panel with HDR capabilities, or perhaps a TV like an LG CX. As a previous poster mentioned, the 400 nits your current monitor has, just won't really cut it. Unfortunately, at present, HDR is an expensive proposition, but the tradeoff is that it is nothing short of an amazing, intoxicating experience to work with and you won't regret spending the money to make it hapoen. I know I didn't.

Ahh... thanks for the insight everyone, it is much appreciated. I'll look for that box, but I'm no longer shooting in HDR, at least for now, and I don't have a decklink card, and so... I should be cool moving forward, but at some point, I may upgrade a few parts of my setup to be able to work in that color space. Thanks again, and most importantly, stay well out there...
