Cut Page sorting possible bug

PostFri Dec 25, 2020 11:00 pm

Hi there,

When I sort my source material by "Date Time" in the dropdown menu, my footages gets sorted by timecode. I know this because when I switch to sorting by "Timecode" the order of the footage (shot over multiple days with multiple different timecodes) doesn't change.
I would expect the sort by "Date Time" on the Cut page to be similar to sorting by "Date Created" on the Edit page. As an amateur I don't do much with TC, I just sync the clock of my camera's and be done with it, and that's works fine on the Edit page, I would like to be able to sort my footage the same way on the Cut page.

Could this be a bug? Anyone else experience this?

Ps: props for DR17 and I'm very pleased with the new Speed Editor, that's a great invention right there, great job!

Does anyone have a workaround for this? This is still happening in Resolve Studio 17 Beta 9. When I sort by Date Modified, it seems to be sorted by timecode instead. Or at the very least, it's NOT sorted by Date Modified which is very obvious looking at the column.

Unfortunately, the bug is still present in the 17 and 17.1 non-beta release. Are the developers aware of this bug, or is it intended maybe as a feature?

My first thought is that proper Metadata for the feature isn't present in those clips.

Hi Jim, what metadata would be missing? I'm shooting on a Sony A7 III and a Sony ZV-1: not the most pro-level camera's but they record TC nonetheless

I don't know what that option is using as sort criteria. It's a good question for one of the engineers, though.

A lot of the other sort options are broke too, including Date Modified, which is not part of the metadata but rather the file system. It works fine in the Edit page so whatever is needed is there since the same application can find it in another context.

I'm happy to read this as I was struggling for half an hour now trying to figure out how come "Source Tape" view doesn't make sense

Sorting clearly doesn't work and this makes "Source Tape" useless as everything is all over the place.

Here's my project: https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/09XL ... g#Stegeren

If you look for instance at the date March 22nd, the files C0732 is showed before C1032, even though C0732 is captured at 19:52 and C1032 at 9:13. I would expect C1032 to be placed on the tape before C0732, so that it sorts first on date created and then on time created.

Thanks for taking a look at this!

Sorting still doesn't work. Attempting to sort according to "Date Time" and it's not even close.

According to page 34 of the DVR 17 New Features manual, sorting by "Date Time" groups clips by date and orders them by Timecode. So the program is behaving in accordance with the manual.

There's clearly a mismatch of expectations and design here. Ideally you'd be able to group by one field and then sort within each group by clicking on a column heading. Failing that, if the current behaviour is to be kept, then it seems like the "Sort" button ought to be named "Group by" and the "Date Time" option relabeled as just "Date".

Not sure why but mine has worked as expected in the CUT page. I think I mentioned on another post. I have been doing family videos of the past few years from my cameras and the families. Range is AX53, AX100, iPhone's, GoPro, DJI pocket. Seems to sort as expected by date and time created. In my case file names do not go in order because they are from different cameras but the actual date and time appears to be correct. I have done three years now and all work that way.

A lot of cameras that don't have "real" timecode support just put the current date and time into the timecode field. If your clips are like that and the cut page is actually sorting by timecode then you wouldn't see the difference.

Only solution for this problem is to change timecode to 00:00:00 for all clips in clip atributes. However, this task is possible just one by one..

Date Modified is working properly here, as are the other available selections. You can see here in the list view Date Modified shows the date and time of creation, then there is the clip name, and finally the Date Created which refers to the current edit. If you move the grey bar below the list you can see more info.

The same goes for the Edit page where there is a more comprehensive list. This is on a dual screen system.

You do not need to start messing with timecodes.

Re: Cut Page sorting possible bug

Unfortunately, this bug has not been solved in Resolve 18. I click on sorting by Date Created and it still sorts it by Timecode. However, I found this workaround: When sort by Date Created is activated but does not work, I click on sort by Date Modified three times and it actually sorts by Date Modified, not by timecode. When e.g. I switch to the edit page and then back to the cut page or change from source tape viewer to timeline viewer, the bug appears again and the clips are sorted by timecode. Now, as sort by Date Modified is active, I have to click three times on sort by Date Created to make the sorting work. Again, If I now switch to the edit page and then back to the cut page, the bug appears again and as sorting by Date Created is active, I would now have to click three times on Date Modified to make it sort the right way again. Really weird behaviour. I Blackmagic fixes this soon.

Changing the timecode of every clip to 00:00:00:00 could also work to avoid this bug, but I could not find away to change the timecode of multiple clips.

I know, in an ideal world, you would have perfect timecode for every clip, but I often have to work with footage where the timecode is completely off or with drone footage, where the timecode always starts with 00:00:00:00.

Date Created is when the clip was copied to your computer. You should be able to sort by Date Modified which is the date the footage was shot.

Here is another example. Clicking on Date Modified has put them into date order irrespective of their timecodes.
This works in both Cut and Edit pages and only requires one click, or as many needed to put them in the order you require..

Hi Charles, thank you for trying to help. In my case, date created and modified are the same – it is always the time I shot the clip. Are you on a Mac or on Windows? I am on a Mac. Maybe that makes a difference too. It still behaves, as buggy, as I described above. Maybe one click is enough for you, because your clips have proper timecode.

I can confirm this bug.

I just did a small test with a mix of a few jpeg stills (no TC) and one .MOV file (good TC). The file names are not in order (intentional) but the "modified dates" are correct and will order the clips correctly in the media page and the edit page, but NOT in the Cut page. Does not matter if you use the pulldown list to sort by "modified date" or click on the text list header.

I was not able to crash Resolve on this occasion, but have had it crash in the past when trying to "force" the Cut page to sort by modified date. (Probably was interacting with the source tape function.)

Mark, I have just tested doing exactly as you have done and it is working fine in the Cut page. It is possible that it was buggy in an earlier version of Resolve. As I don't use the Cut page I would not have seen the problem.

Nope, not fixed in 18.04 either. Sorry :) See attached screen snip.

You can TEMPORARILY force it to the correct "date modified" order by selecting some other sort order in the pulldown list, then clicking a couple times on the "date modified" header, but this sorting is lost as soon as you perform any other operation - e.g adding a clip to the timeline.

It may be that in your case the "date modified" order also matches some other sort order (e.g. file name) and that is where DR is ACTUALLY getting its order, even though it APPEARS to be the "date modified."

I've noticed that the issue is especially pronounced when using clips from multiple sources, such as my Sony A1 and my DJI drone.
