Sony Venice Footage Color Shift on playback

PostMon Apr 19, 2021 3:32 am

I have a timeline that is a combination of film scans and Sony Venice footage and the Venice footage shifts towards red on playback. It does this both visually and in both resolve's scopes and external scopes. It shifts back a half second after you stop playback, and it's just the Venice footage.

It's not in the export but is very noticeable in playback and I have a session tomorrow. Anyone have any thoughts?

That's weird.

What happens if you move to ACES?

Same result.

Also just tried making a new project and moving a test timeline over, same thing. Also I didn't notice it but it's not just on playback, it's when I scrub too.

No Proxies, Cache or Optimized Media in play?

Timeline Proxy Mode is Off?

In a new project, start fresh without moving things from the other. Report back.

None of the above and Proxy Mode is off.

Made a fresh project, reconformed one spot. No issues, only thing on the clips is a Color Transform to 709. Going to start adding corrections and see if it breaks.

Broke pretty fast, did two correctors with some basic lift gamma gain and log corrections and played with the color temp. Problem immediately re-appeared.

Set the Camera Raw setting back to Use Project Setting, problem goes away, set it back to Clip and play with the color temp, problem reappears.

So I guess that's it. I'm going to go see if I can set the project color temp to where I want it for most of the shots and then set the rest to Use Camera Metadata and see what happens.

Are you decoding at full res?

i hav'nt touched tint/temp in the raw controls, leave them @ metadata and tweak with the gradeing controls, usualy the DP's & DiT's i work with have the raw dialed pretty much into their sweet spot already

i know i'd lean on raw controls alot more if working in YRGB

This leads me to think there's some sort of optimized media, proxy, etc. That or media is being decoded at something other than full res.

with that said, everything i've read on this thread tells me otherwise. So not too sure...What version of Resolve are you running?

Full Res - Resolve.

Which led to an interesting discovery! If I switch it over to Full Res - Sony I get what really looks like the same color shift, it just doesn't come and go when I hit play, it's on the whole time. Seems very suspicious.

And yeah, I'm hitting the color temp pretty hard because there must have been some sort of change of opinion/direction/whatever between the shoot and me. Footage was lit super warm/yellow and they want me to neutralize it by like 50%.

Another way to not use the Color Temp controls in the Camera Raw pallet is to instead do it with a Chromatic Adaptation OFX plug-in. The results are pretty much the same when you set the input color temp and output color temp to whatever you're expecting, like 3200° (warm) to 6500° (normal Rec709). But it should not change from play to stop.

I would also look at the Performance settings and see if it might be using Optimized media behind your back.
