Way to minimize background music in song?

PostMon Apr 26, 2021 7:58 pm

I was wondering if there was a way within fairlight to lower the volume of the background music of a song file so I can emphasize the singer's voice?

If you have all the original audio stems, sure.

If you don't...

Fairlight can't do that. You can try "Music Rebalance" which is a part of Izotope RX. I believe they have a demo.

I think that's not what the TO is asking for.
Changing the intensity of a singer vs the background in the same recording is far more complicated.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Generally cases like this are pretty hopeless. You could try investing in iZotope RX, and that can be used to extract dialog to a point, but there's always going to be artifacts and issues, because the level and EQ and compression constantly change. I use iZotope in standalone mode and then bring the track into Resolve (or ProTools if I'm using that). You can check out some demos of iZotope at this link:

There's also a plugin from Leapwing that can do that, I think it's called CenterOne. They may have a demo version you can try before you buy.

Essentially all of this tools (including Izotope last I checked) do a M/S separation and then treat the mid separately, with more sophisticated methods to isolate the vocal component without bringing up the bass, snare and other center panned instruments.
