XDCAM MPEG2 OP-Atom not available in v17

PostFri Mar 12, 2021 8:41 am

Running v17.1 on W10.

XDCAM MPEG2 OP-Atom is not available in the Deliver Page in v17 anymore, only in OP1A. Is this a normal behavior ? Or am I missing something ?

I'm still relying on it a lot for some TV work here in France, and XDCAM was available in OP-Atom in v16.

I am in the TV business and I see the same problem.
Currently all my PC stations are in Resolve Studio 17.1.0.
9 PC stations no longer allow rendering in XDCAM50 op-atom and 2 stations allow it.
Stations that do not allow are Z440 to Z8 in 17.1.0
The two that allow are homemade stations in 17.0.00039.

I just tested with Resolve 17.1.1 on Z8 is no XDCam in Op-Atom.
I think since version 17.1.0 the XDCam 50 has disappeared from the renders.

We use it often and had no issues with Resolve 16.
For MACs, it is no longer available on MacPro 2019 and MAC Pro 2013 currently in 17.1.0
the Imac yes because still in 17.0.00039.
I just sent a ticket to Blackmagic
Thanks,

From the info i have, the XDCAM format should only be OP1a.
Who requires this for deliverable and what device then plays it?

Hello,
From Resolve 14 through Resolve 17.0 have used several Resolves in Render Farm mode to transcode to XDCam 50 interlaced 1080i OP-Atom. The natives transcoded in XDCam 50 interlaced with AAF are imported into AVID to carry out the movements of most emission TV in France. Editing and color grading is done on Avid using the XDCam 50 generated by Resolve. Once completed, the PAD is delivered in XDCam 50 to the TV channel.

In recent years, Avid has been gaining power on the XDCam 50 Op-atom transcoding speed compared to Resolve, which is getting slower and slower. On Resolve 17.0 a 10h timeline starts at 200fps then after 30% of transcoded clips the bitrate drops to 50fps. No drop in bit rate in other formats / codecs such as DNx36 transcoding which is used for proxy editing of fictions and films before confo on natives.
I often transcode 100h timelines with thousands of SONY FS7 / FX9 clips in DNx36 and I have no slowdown during the 14h transcodes.

The render farm mode with 12 Resolve allows you to run a lot of parallel computing that Avid does not yet allow or you have to stay ahead to move on to the next one. If you could put back the XDCam 50 Op-atom which disappeared from version 17.1.0 that would be great. If you can speed up are transcodes and see why the rate decreases over a long timeline, I'm interested.

Bonus: Not possible to display a correct timeline duration above 255h

Thanks for your help

Hello to you both !

Sorry, I haven't logged on in a while.

@Michael, glad to see I'm not the only one facing this issue. The funny thing is we botch seem to work in France. For now, I use an other system with Resolve 16 to do this kind of work. Not the best solution.

@Peter, I understand XDCAM should only be OP1a, but like Michael said we sometimes have to round-trip to Avid this way. So is there any reason why was it available in OP-Atom in v16 and not anymore un v17 ?

Wouldn't DNx be the better option for moving between NLE's?

No, XDCam is the PAD delivery format for TV channels in France.
For now customers request this format.

Blackmagic's response scares me.
"Hi Michael,

Ah apologies I missed the MXF Op-Atom distinction and was referring to the OP1A setting. MXF Op-Atom XDCAM MPEG2 looks like it has been removed from Resolve 17.1 onwards. In order to use the MXF Op-Atom XDCAM MPEG2 render settings, you will need to roll back to version 17.0.
"

I have a Render Farm of 10 Resolves to compute the XDCam 50 when I need them and I would also like to keep updating the Resolves to take advantage of what's new.
Hope the XDCam 50 Op-Atom will return.
Thanks

Blackmagic Response
"Hi Michael,

I will forward your request to include MXF Op-Atom XDCAM MPEG2 to our feature request team for inclusion in future versions of Resolve. For now though, the only way to use that codec would be to roll back to an earlier version of Resolve.

Yeah but, if you're going from Resolve to Avid, you're not delivering yet.

So...DNx for that step, then XDCam out of Avid.

Seems like that would be the better option.

Thank you blackmagic for the return of the XDCam 50 Op-Atom in Resolve 17.2
You are awesome.
