Help on Particles in Resolve Fusion?

PostMon May 17, 2021 3:00 am

Hi - Help!(?)

I am trying to create a landslide with rock .obj particles via Replicate3D.
I have got something working with moderate results but it is beyond me to get the particles to stop.
I have a pForce cube to catch them but having trouble getting that to follow a slope up to the right over an old b&w pic. I have the advantage of being able to obscure a bit behind "50s film grunge"

Edit: Trapcode has a "Freeze Time" or something - is there an equivalent in Fusion Particles?

I am slowly getting Fusion but help right now would be gratefully welcomed...

Can anyone suggest resources for understanding Fusion particles?

To get particles to stop, I usually go for pFriction. It usually depends on the situation though.
If you can share what you have so far, we can take a look at it. If it's under NDA you can also DM through the forum. I did something similar about 18 years ago when I used Fusion particles to create the little rocks that were displaced from a meteorite impact, which sounds similar to what you're trying to accomplish.

For more help, you can also consider posting this in the Fusion forum instead of the Resolve one, since I know a couple of the more proficient Fusion users don't wade through all the Resolve threads, just to find the Fusion ones.

Hi Sander.

It sounds very much like the right kind of thing.

How do I show you what I have already?

I have been working on pFriction but it is a bit brutal: hard stops, no cushioning…at least for my novice embrace of Fusion Particles.

Cheers

Just select all your nodes in the node view, copy and paste them between the

brackets in this forum. Apart from the *obj files and the bg image we'll be able to reconstruct what you have so far.

It is Work In Progress…
There are things turned off and I am just looking at the render from this code and the turbulence is not what I was planning.

The .obj’s/fbx are free rocks from TurboSquid (the 12 variety pack) if that is of interest.

I do appreciate another set of eyes on this…been trying to keep my client on-side, wants me to revert to AE and Trapcode…

The code is only a mediaIn, a polygon and a transform tool. There are no particles to be found.

The .obj’s/fbx are free rocks from TurboSquid (the 12 variety pack) if that is of interest.

A link would be helpful. There are a lot of rocks on Turbosquid.

No problem. I spend time on it when I have it available, if not, you'll just have to wait. ;)

here is a short sequence showing

dot removed.

I double checked my copy/paste and was able to replicate locally.
there are a number of nodes turned off and there is a particle tree for steam that is disconnected from the Merge3D - my client doesnt think it helps...landslides are usually a wet conditions phenomenon and the steam as dust, despite obscuration benefits, does not have approval.

I noticed that I painted a texture to go behind the landslide but I am likely to dump that. Currently blended out at the merge.

I guess ultimate Fusion gurudom is achieved when one can create effects just writing XML?

I wasn't expecting it to be so hard to upload a text file - I tried changing the extension to all sorts - even .jpg and got "the dimensions for the file could not be determined"

I don't want to be *that guy* but your dropbox-link doesn't work either. It doesn't contain info that relates to *your* specific dropbox, so it wants to find the file in my file/folder structure.
You probably need to share the link in a different way.
Like I said, you can DM me, so you won't have to remove the dots from the url.
I've seen the video and I can see why you'd want to improve on it.

I'm not sure about not wanting 'steam' though. The landslide videos I've just watched all come with a lot of dust, but hey I'm not your client.

Hi...
I am just rendering a newer version. Discoveries like pAvoid are helping.
Once this render is done I will replace the code and get you a better link. I did test the Dropbox link but as you say, it might just work for my account.

Is your client close to being happy?
In the videos I saw, most landslides have different levels of debris size. There's usually a big chunk that breaks off that takes the rest of the top layer with it. And then you get the small stuff that you animated.

He was the one recommending that I keep it all small and gravelly. Todays efforts are much better/closer to his brief but I am having trouble back filling: getting it to stack back up the hill against the pFriction...maybe there is a better approach that I am yet to stumble across.

Landslide might make it sound too grand...hillslide or mud slide might be better. Visual records are scant - what we have been able to find shows lots of vegetation so clearly some time later.

"Render In Place" has been showing 20 minutes since it was at about 10% - now its at about 60% and still showing 20 minutes...

Stacking will always be difficult in a 2.5D simulation like this in Fusion (or other programs) since to get things to stack they need to occupy actual physical space in the simulation and most particle systems don't have this. For example in Blender you can have a rigid body simulation, but if you want to fill a bucket with particles that interact with each other, then you'll need an add-on to make that work.

Fusion's particles are cool, but they have no 'spatial awareness' in the sense that they can actually bounce off each other and stack on top of each other. I haven't used Trapcode, but I can't imagine that it does have something like this. You will always have to cheat it.
