Support for reading gyroscopic metadata on Sony Venice clips

PostWed May 12, 2021 12:07 pm

Support for reading gyroscopic metadata on Sony Venice clips was listed as a feature in the latest Resolve update (17.2). I am wondering if anyone knows that this could be the first step towards reading this type of data in the Sony A7sIII / FX3, FX6 cameras as well?

I don't have a Venice so I am not sure how this feature works in that camera.

Have downloaded v17.2. Can't see where in Resolve gyroscopic metadata is. Have tried searching the 3588 pages of the help file to no avail. Does anyone know where in Davinci this resides and likewise does it work with the FX6 not just Venice camera?

To my knowledge no NLE currently supports Sony gyro stabilization metadata from the FX6, FX9 or Venice. Your only option is stabilize the clips one at a time using Sony's Catalyst Browse utility.

Sony's gyro stabilization works well at 60 fps and 1/120 shutter, but less well at 24 fps and 1/50, due to frame blurring.

In general I've found that lens optical stabilization combined with a little NLE stabilization works about as well in many cases. Resolve Studio has a great stabilizer.

Sony's stabilization does work very well in some difficult cases such as wide angle shots, which are difficult for optical or IBIS stabilization to handle.

OK, I just saw the 17.2 release notes mentioning support for Sony Venice gyro stabilization metadata. I will test that on my FX6 and A7SIII.

I tried UHD 4k/59.94 XAVC-I MXF material from a FX6 running firmware 1.01 in Resolve 17.2 Build 11 on a Vega 64 10-core iMac Pro running Big Sur 11.3.1, and I don't see any Resolve UI indicating it's using Sony gyro data. I verified the gyro data is there by stabilizing it in Catalyst Browse 2020.1.0.594. In Resolve I tried stabilizing it in the Edit page, Color page (both regular and classic stabilizers) and also the Fusion page.

The usual stabilizers all work as expected, but there was no UI option for Sony gyro data, and observationally the stabilized result was not using the gyro data.

As the 17.2 release notes indicate, it may currently be specific to Venice material. Unfortunately I don't have any of that to test. Since Catalyst Browse handles gyro data from the A7SIII, FX3, FX6, FX9, it would be great if Resolve did that.

+1 for this feature request. Being able to use the gyro data from my FX6 would be a tremendous feature in Resolve.

I also hope Blackmagic will let us know where this resides. I requested this feature several versions ago.

I'm trying 17.2 with Venice footage now and can't see anything new either. Nothing in the manual too.

I'll just add the A1 to the wishlist of camera support... once we all figure out exactly what "support" means here!

For those following this thread it looks like Shrinivas from Blackmagic added some pertinent information in this thread:

thanks for the link. I see that, in its current form, it's relatively basic support. In addition, I looked at my A1 footage and the metadata wasn't shown; it looks like it's actually Venice-only for the moment.

For all my Sony shooters out there looking for gyro stabilization, there's a new Free and open source project called Gyroflow that does just that. The standalone version is in pre-release, and a Resolve plugin is on their roadmap.

Actually the plugin is already available. You still need the standalone app as GUI, but it saves you from rendering intermediates.

As I'm sure you all saw, BMD just released gyro stabilization for the Pocket Cinema Camera line. Maybe we can convince them to go the extra mile and support Sony gyro metadata?
