A ponder for film buffs and those who like the short film format. I've been thinking about what sequences in feature films might work as a stand-alone short film.
The sequence in Wes Anderson's Rushmore where Max solves the hardest geometry problem in the world is a good example. The diner scene in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive could be another one. Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction almost seems like a series of shorts put together, but I especially like the story about the watch.
What films would you edit down to a 5 or 10 minute short? I don't mean trailers that are a mash-up of key scenes to advertise the film, I mean what portion of an existing feature film would you edit down to make a great short?
What does this say about the nature of the short film format?
