Aspect ratio 1:85:1

PostWed Jun 16, 2021 9:41 am

i want to shoot movie in 1: 85: 1 aspect ratio, but how did i find out bmcc 2.5k sensor with 16: 9 size.
If you crop the image to 1: 85: 1, then this is not the true aspect ratio, but simply 16: 9 cropped at the top and bottom
That is, in order to shoot in true 1: 85: 1, I need an anamarfot and then cut it to 1: 85: 1, or am I mistaken?

No sensor or filmgate is actually proportioned as 1:1.85. That ratio is just a crop of the potential recording area. Shoot 16:9 and crop it in post. Depending on the camera, you may have the option to display 1.85 frame guides while shooting.

Aspect ratio 1:85:1

The closest vintage cameras were the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K and the original URSA 4K that used the same sensor, 4000x2160. You crop the top and bottom to 3996x2160 and you have the popular cinematic 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

"Once"? Here's a partial list of recent big budget 1.85 features.

Thanks, John. I’ve seen several of those and didn’t realize they were 1.85:1. I’ll amend my post.

Well, in fairness, all the Oscar nominated best pictures were widescreen this year, so it's definitely changing. And with streaming, you see lots of stuff at 2:1 and above, and multiple ratios. Asian films have been predominately widescreen for years.

Strangely, 1.37 is making a bit of comeback, in the art film world. There's even one where a character pulls the screen open to 2:39, like a closet door.
