Well, in fairness, all the Oscar nominated best pictures were widescreen this year, so it's definitely changing. And with streaming, you see lots of stuff at 2:1 and above, and multiple ratios. Asian films have been predominately widescreen for years.
Strangely, 1.37 is making a bit of comeback, in the art film world. There's even one where a character pulls the screen open to 2:39, like a closet door.
