Read & Write speeds for editing 4K?

PostMon Jul 26, 2021 1:19 am

I'm building up another editor and I see another "Gotcha", is your HD's have to be fast. Like striped RAID 0 or 5. For 4k editing will these SSD drives be enough? Or should I Strip two of them RAID 0?

Have you ever seen a camera using raid cards?

NVME is faster than even CFe cards. You can record 8K to Cfe cards. 4K shouldn't challenge a NVME or even a SATA SSD.

I'd say you want something that can hit at least 400MB/s
playing back 4k prores4444 hits about 350 for 24fps
4k dpx hits about 800 - but I doubt you would be editing with that.

the faster the better though - but if you are working with more compressed formats it doesn't matter as much.

"4K" doesn't really enter this equation. Data rate is the relevant factor, and there isn't a direct correlation between data rate and resolution.

Blackmagic RAW Speed Test is a good tool. Comes with the Blackmagic RAW player. ... al-cameras
