Sony ZV-1 best recording format for editing in Resolve

PostMon Aug 02, 2021 5:32 pm

What is the best recording format for importing video into Resolve Studio? My Sony ZV-1 can record XAVC S HD and AVCHD. I plan to record at 1920x1080p 30fps 10-20mbps but can also record at 29.97 or 24 fps and can record in 4k and downscale to 1080p HD. I’ll be recording short video podcast style videos for my classes. For online classes, we have to record a couple of video podcast style presentations to post in the class forums. I’ll be recording at my desk and plan to record video to my laptop so I can use my Rode Procaster mic with my Audient iD4 for better audio. I’ll edit in Resolve and create 1080p HD for posting on Vimeo. Most people will be viewing on small laptop screens or phones so I can do 1080p or 720p or downscaled 4k. My computer won’t handle 4k editing so it’s 1080P max for me. I'm new to Resolve and video editing, I have more experience with mixing and editing sound.

Available formats
NTSC/PAL Selector: [PAL] mode AVCHD: 24 M FX (1,920 x 1,080/50i) / 17 M FH (1,920 x 1,080/50i), XAVC S 4K: 25p 100 M (3,840 x 2,160/25p) / 25p 60 M (3,840 x 2,160/25p), XAVC S HD: 50p 50 M (1,920 x 1,080/50p) / 50p 25 M (1,920 x 1,080/50p) / 25p 50 M (1,920 x 1,080/25p) / 25p 16 M (1,920 x 1,080/25p) / 100p 100 M (1,920 x 1,080/100p) / 100p 60 M (1,920 x 1,080/100p

If your machine can handle it, I'd record in UHD with 30 fps and XAVC and use it in a HD timeline.
If that should stutter, use HD.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

1. Anything RAW
2. DNx or ProRes

My list ends there. Cameras that offer neither aren't an option.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
