Resolve Audio Lags

PostFri Aug 13, 2021 3:59 am

Hi all,

I'm experiencing a strange issue I haven't seen anyone else have.

My audio which I'm hearing out of my speakers is slightly behind the timeline.
When the audio hits a peak on the waveform while playing, the audio hit a peak on the speakers a second after.

This is despite my laptop playing 4K quite comfortably with no issues.
So it's not a graphics issue.

Thanks,

System spec? viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190

What are the specs of the source media?

Is this behaviour present on the Edit or Fairlight Timeline?
⟦ Mac Pro 7,1 Rack ⊕ 16-core 3.2GHz ⊕ 32GB RAM ⊕ Radeon 580X • Resolve Studio 19.0 • macOS 14.4.1 ⟧
⟦ Fairlight Studio Console ⊕ Fairlight Audio Accelerator ⊕ Merging Hapi • Anubis • Ravenna CoreAudio VAD ⟧

Sorry, to answer your questions.
Specs:
Windows 10

11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7

16 GB RAM

Internal GPU
NVIDIA GeForce MX450
Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics

I use Davinci with an external Chroma Core X and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, however the issue is still present even when the eGPU is not attached and I am running off the internal graphics.

Yes, the issue is also present in the Fairlight AND the edit tab. It is also present when previewing the videos without putting them on the timeline.

Would love some help on this one?
I am a videographer, and this makes working with Resolve extremely hard.

What are the specs of the source media? Use MediaInfo to inspect.

It doesn't matter the media format. It's behind whatever media I use.

This happens to me frequently, so I understand how difficult it can be to edit effectively when it happens. Closing and restarting Resolve usually fixes it for me.

I've usually put it down to a Linux quirk, as I don't recall it happening quite so frequently when I was running Windows, but something simple you might try in any case.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately no amount of restarting Resolve or the PC seems to resolve the issue. (Pun not intended).

Might you have other media external to Davinci Resolve, playing? Like YouTube, or some music, another video player like VLC or Windows Media Player, a conference call (Zoom), etc.

Those are usually the triggers for my issue.

No, it still happens even with no media in the background.

There is something which stands out in your specs. Did you disable the Intel graphics? If not, do so. The side effect is usually a more obvious playback failure, rather than audio lag, but worth trying.

Yes,
the Intel graphics are disabled. They are greyed out, but also disabled.
I can only enable and disable the NVIDIA graphics.

Are you using Proxies by any chance?
The audio has been pretty buggy for me too but usually still plays at the correct moment for the most part

What about if you play it back frame by frame is the audio still wrong then?

That's the funny thing, audio is correct if I go frame by frame, but if I play it, it is out of time.

Only idea I have:

You can pound in a nail with a wrench, the work will get done. But a wrench is not the proper tool for that job.

In this industry, Laptops will forever be wrenches.

The proper tools here are hammers and desktops.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I tend to agree with this. An i7 laptop does not equal an i7 desktop and the same is true for video cards.

Do you have a desktop system you can try with @7malligk, to at least rule it out? Any desktop that was reasonably powerful 3-4 years ago, may still be faster (if perhaps constrained by some other factors, like older SSD or lack of).

can anyone experiencing this please test 17.3 and in particular if you are on windows as we now have ASIO support which might reduce the lag

is the audio waveform and meters in sync with the video frame playback?
if now, also check the setting for preferences, user, fairlight.. video i/o offset.

Thanks for the support, unfortunately, even with the update the audio still lags when playing.
HOWEVER, your suggestion to change the offset for the playback worked.
I changed the offset to 7, and now the audio is pretty much in sync, I don't think it's quite spot on, but it's close enough. Would be good to have a little extra wiggle room, as 7 is just a few frames short.
However, it will work well enough for me. :D
I really appreciate your support and can happily say the problem is solved.

Thank you very much.
Your support has helped so much.

I'm having a very similar issue. Posted here: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=174118

I'm running Linux on an AMD 5950X, RTX 3090, 64GB DDR-4, and an nvme SSD. I notice the lag with headphones and on speakers.

Were you able to find a solution?

I experienced much improved a/v-sync in the Edit page by changing "Timeline view options" to "Thumbnail view" instead of "Filmstrip view". Also I use "Bypass color grades".

In my case, disabling "Show all video frames" did not improve Edit page a/v-sync.
