LUTs not applying

PostSun Aug 22, 2021 8:31 pm

I have encountered a new problem, I believe after the install of 17.3

LUTs will not apply to any clips. I have tried R3D and .mov Mavic clips, and LUTs have no effect when applied in:

Right Click on clip (in Media page or in clip bar in Color page) > LUT
-or-
Project Settings > Color Management > Lookup Tables

LUTs will apply when I add to node, or when I scrub over the LUT in the color page under LUTs tab

The Bypass button is not engaged. What am doing wrong here? I tried resetting UI and reverting Resolve to factory settings to no avail

Mac Mini M1 (11.5.2)
Resolve Studio 17.3

Thanks!

I have no such option.

those are two separate ways to apply LUTs. I edited my original post for clarity

Still experiencing this, even after updates to both MacOS & Resolve

No one else? Is there something I can do to troubleshoot?

Are you using the default location fo the LUT? No weird symbolic link/extra folders?

Hi Walter, thanks for chiming in

Default LUT folder location, no weird folders or links

Clicking the button Project Settings>Color Management>Lookup Tables>Open LUT Folder opens the correct folder

I even just tried deleting my entire LUT folder and reinstalling Resolve. The installer recreated the folder and stock LUTS, and it doesn't help at all. Still experiencing this problem. Does this sound like some weird setting I have on?

To reiterate, the LUTs work fine when I apply them in a node on the Color Page. However, they do not work when right clicking and applying to clips in Media Page or apply as Input lookup table or Output lookup table in the project settings

Any change with 17.3.1 or 17.3.2?

Checking 17.3.1 Studio on an M1 Mac Mini, the Media page - clip right click LUT menu, is working as expected.

Checked it both in normal mode and Rosetta mode. Works in both.

So don't know why it's not working for you.

Can you provide a link to a simple Resolve Project Archive .dra (zipped) using a small media file that exhibits the issue on your system. Maybe there is some obscure setting we're not using that you are that's causing the issue.

Thank you for your help Dwaine

No change with the newer versions of 17

Here is a small trimmed R3D in a simple project, using the included RED_AWASH.cube creative LUT as an example

It works here. But I will admit, the difference is very minor with and without the LUT. (as in setting the LUT directly on the file itself. If I set it as input lookup table in Project Settings there's a huge difference)
So the question is then: Are you sure that any LUT is applying? To test: Use the Cintel Negative to Linear LUT.
If the image stays the same you have a "LUT not applying" problem. If the image changes you have a "LUT makes so small changes it's invisible" problem.

“Any lut” does not work or “this creative LUT” does not work?

Because those are two very distinct issues.

Can you load JUST the LUT so we can see it?

Cintel Negative to Linear LUT does apply correctly.

it appears that the problem may be in .cube LUTs. Also, the Arri Alexa LogC to Rec709.dat LUT does not work. XML, .ilut, .olut all seem to apply properly, but there is ZERO change in image with any .cube LUTs, whether stock from Resolve or third party LUTs

To check:
1) make a new database called “test”
2) make a new project called “test” inside it
3) load a JPEG form your machine
4) make a new timeline with that jpeg only, use default project property without doing anything else
5) go in color
6) drag the ARRI lut form e solve in teh node.

Does it works or not?

Thank you Walter,

I actually was just testing something similar and have discovered that I do not experience this problem in another database of mine.

So it's a problem in my main database

I'm thinking more of a setting that a database.

if you make a fresh project and do not change the settings, does it works?

I have narrowed down the problem, it involves the setting:

Project Settings > Color Management > Lookup Tables > 3D lookup table interpolation

When set to Trilinear all is good. When set to Tetrahedral, I am experiencing my problem

ok, that is weird... Tetrahedral is the better interpolation, and we use it all the times, and it should not be a big strain on the GPU.

Can you remind us which GPU do you have and which drivers are you using?

If you start Resolve in Rosetta mode, does that help with this issue?

Had a chance to test this on our M1 Mac Mini with Big Sur 11.6 and Resolve Studio 17.3.2.

And I see the same. It is an M1 specific thing. Reported to the dev team.

And it did start with 17.3. Works as expected with 17.2.2.

Changing this setting solved a different problem for me on the new MacBook Pro M1 Max with factory fresh install of OSX Monterey and latest version of Resolve 18.

When I applied a Panasonic Vlog Rec709 LUT to Varicam LT footage I got an image with extreme banding. Problem solved when I changed the 3D LUT interpolation from Trilinear to Tetrahedral.

Just in case someone has similar issues.
