17.4 jerky playback

PostThu Dec 02, 2021 12:41 pm

Have anybody else experienced sluggish playback in 17.4. Im not 100% sure, but I think it was fine in 17.2. Prior I ran the beta version of 17 with zero playback issues. I have dubbed checked so davinci do both decompression and debayer.

I have bad playback with EXR-files, I think it was better before. Even Fusion seems to play them better (standalone)

each version jump of DR17 requires a higher hardware configuration.
these jumps also existed in the previous versions (e.g. DR16), but they were not so far apart.

It worked great in the beta. I did how ever not uninstall the beta prior to the installation of the official 17 version. In Windows task manager I see that the network hitting 100 %.
But I have not changed anything on the media server. In davinci it shows it's playing 25 fps while stuttering.

I changed the cat6a cable so its nothing wrong with that. I then updated the firmware on my nic card and than the drivers for it. I get normal speeds men copying from and to the server... So I dont belive its wrong there. Disc speed test is normal.

Hi all

Can you add some info on your system configuration, OS, drivers, Resolve (studio?free?) build numbers (from the About Resolve menu) and the codecs you're using?

A link to sample source media and DRPs (to check for effects/settings) - would help too. For EXRs specifically, outside of support for ZIP1 formats in 17.4, there aren't any significant changes since the 17 betas.

I checked the playback again and it seems to play my UHD DWAB exr's fine now, 29,970 fps. Originals where from Unreal Engine 4 (uncompressed) and compressed with Fusion to DWAB.

I don't know what was wrong a week ago. Resolve Studio 17.4.1 build 4 was not playing compressed exr's smoothly. Maybe I was using another compression, don't remember what. It happened more than one day I think. OS is W10, 3 hd in RAID, RTX 3080

I report here if I notice this problem again.

Davinci Resolve Studio 17, Version 17.4.2 Build 9
Workstation
Super Micro x9dai motherboard
2x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2687W 0 @ 3.10GHz
64,0 GB RAM
Windows 10 Pro build 19043.1348
Nvidia GTX 1080TI 11GB Studio driver 456.71
Asus XG-C100C 10GBE nic card senaste firmwaren och driverna.
Media Server
Qnap TS-1685 For media sever using 10GBE

I see in the taskmanager that the network is peaking to 100%. It should be plenty of bandwidth left when playing only one stream of 8k full deabyer. It have worked for years.

When running playback in davinci, the 10gbe between the qnap and the workstation maxing out at only 1gigabit and claim it uses 100% of the bandwidth. There should be 9 gigabit bandwidth left if it worked proper. Using black magic disk speed test only gave me 940 write and 755 read, but it should work easy with those speeds. So the qnap does not seem to be the bigger problem as it feeds DaVinci with enough data. Looking at windows task manager at the 10GBE card it looks proper when running the disk speed test.

But playbacking in davinci shows only 1gigabit instead of 10?

Here is a image from windows taskmanager while doing playback in Davinci (was not even playingback 8k).

Sequencial IO and random IO really are not the same thing and using parity based RAID levels make this difference the worst. Consider RAID 10 instead if RAID 5/6 for example.

Second test. After doing a second test a manged to get dropouts from a simple 8k stream wich was super fluide in the first test (playing many 8k clips). Here is another image from that. Not sure what is the best thing to capture to find the bottleneck.

First test today.
Today I have time to search for errors. But for some reason, playback of one 8k full debayer 16bit works solid. But two streams of 8k gets it choppy. I like to know the bottle neck.
Here is a image of the Resource monitor while playbacking one stream of red 8k full debayer 16 bit.
Ether 3 is my 10Gbe card.
