The free Davinci Resolve activation code?

I've downloaded the Davinci Resolve pack, but now I'm being asked for an activation code? Where will I find it please?

This is what to look for. Studio versions say "Studio" in the title.

Hi guys

I'm having the same issue.

I've installed Studio version by mistake, uninstalled, downloaded free version, installed it, and it stills wants an activation key from me.

I'm pretty sure I've got the correct version downloaded this time.

The installator allows me to only install DaVinci Control Panels for some reason, and the installation Wizard says I've got DaVinci Resolve 18,5 installed, whereas I don't have it anywhere on my computer.

Also, for some reason it shows me "Windows 10 (x64)", meanwhile I have Windows 11.

When I click "Install" without Control Panels checked, it shows a brief notification: "Installed" right after with no installation process.

When I go to "Apps", the only app containing "Resolve" in its name is Control Panels.


i think there is some error here and I messed up big time.

Nope.

I don't have said folder on my hard drive.

And when I'm trying to install DaVinci Resolve, the installer says I have newer version installed, and I should uninstall it first in Control Panels.

But I don't have it installed whatsoever.

I thought it might have something to do with flawed registry keys, but there is no BlackMagic Design in the registry either.

Look in the Apps & features area of Windows Settings. Might also be called Apps - Installed apps.

What size is the DaVinci Resolve app?

If it's 5.69 GB, that's the Studio version. Select it, and select Uninstall and then run the free Resolve installer version (the one that doesn't have Studio in the file name).

If it's 3.73 GB, then you have the free version installed.

Which do you see?

My guess is your number is bogus. The free version doesn't require a number at all to install or run. You can't run Resolve Studio unless you pay for it.

Regarding that license code. Doing search on it brings up some old Hungarian forums post asking the same question you do.
I hope you did not buy that code and if you did you should do the ordinary steps to report and manage the fraud.

To add, a genuine Studio Activation code contains 20 letters and numbers, not just numbers.
Advice to anyone wanting to use Resolve. Only download from the Blackmagic Support page, and if you want to use the Studio version only purchase the Activation code from either Blackmagic themselves, or one of their official resellers.

I've downloaded the free version as directed by Charles and it definitely says free. I extracted this and ran as admin but it opens up as studio and then obviously wants a code. I tried this 4 times to be sure, to be sure....

Is it the wrong link on the page?

The splash screen says Studio, so that was definitely a Studio installer you ran.

All the Resolve software is on the web site Support page, in the DaVinci Resolve/Fusion area:

All versions back to Resolve 10.1.5 are available there. Anything that says Stuido in the name, is the Studio version. Anything that does not have Studio in the name is the free version.

And even though there are all called Update, they are full installers.

Looks like you are on Windows. Here is a link to the Windows Resolve 18.6.5 free version:

Using that link on the Blackmagic website Resolve page you will get this. The Free version is on the left. Both are free to download, but you will need to purchase an Activation code to use the Studio version.

and then i select the 18.6.6 update.. not the Studio update.

Could it be as simple that you have multiple downloaded versions of Resolve?
Both previously downloaded Studio version as well as the free which Dwaine linked to - but you launch and install the Studio version by mistake?

I'd removed all instances of the program and restarted my machine before following Dwaine's link and again i did this twice to be sure, I might try this on another machine just to fully rule out that scenario

I came here looking for why the free version as asking for a license key as i just downloaded this so i could take my son choir recital that i recorded on both mine an my wife phone where i took a wide shot video and my wife zoomed in on our son and wanted to merge the 2 video with him in a small box on the side basically a picture in picture to just post on FB.. now i feel dumb i just clicked free download and then it gave the 2 and just clicked windows version not paying attention that i clicked the studio not the free....

Thanks for the help getting the right version here is what I figured out how to do with zero editing experience

As has been stated in this thread, the free version of Resolve will not ask for an Activation Key, only the Studio version will do this.
Download the Resolve installer from the Support page of the Blackmagic website. You can then be sure it is an official one.

Another thing people have tripped up on is which Windows version to download. Unless your computer has the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor, you need to use the Windows x86 one.
