Kodachrome LUT for BRAW and BM Prores film mode

PostFri Jun 10, 2022 11:30 pm

I’m a fan of the Kodachrome look in the 70s and 80s and often use it as the basis for my custom grade. I’ve followed Frank Glencairn blobs on his K-Tone creation and have used his rec709 LUT version in the past. I read somewhere (can’t remember where) that Robert Niessner have made 3 new variations of K-Tone. I wonder if any of that were for BRAW and Prores for BM URSA Mini Pro G2 and BM Pocket 6K in Gen4 and Gen5 color science. It would be nice to have such LUTS for BMD raw and log in-camera monitoring and to be used in Resolve as well.

Robert, looking forward to your response. :)

I’ll have a look into it.
I’ve found it to be much more difficult creating balanced LUTs for Gen 5 because of its very flat look.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thanks Robert. At the moment, Do you by any chance have it for Gen 4?

I am curious if anyone knows what flavor of log these expect (or were made for)?
There is, after all, quite a big difference between log flavors :)

As I made them - I know the answer ;-)

LBK-K-Tone works with BMD filmlog color science gen 4; but also with gen 5 if you add some contrast.
LBK-K-Tone-Intense works with gen 5.

The same should go for similar flat log spaces like slog2/3 or canon log.

Hi Robert, what is the difference of the LBK-K-Tone-Intense-BackLift with LBK-K-Tone-Intense? Also, for in-camera monitor reference only, I assume that I can use the LBK-K-Tone-Intense LUT on the Pocket 6K as it is for Gen 5 while the LBK-K-Tone LUT is for the UMP G2 since it is Gen 4. Thanks so much!!!

LBK-K-Tone-Intense is based on LBK-K-Tone but with more saturation, down pulled highlights luminance, and composited via overlay mode.

LBK-K-Tone-Intense-BlackLift is the same as above but with raised blacks

You can also try this with LBK-K-Tone-Intense:

Input ---> CorrectorNode1 ----------------------> LayerMixer1 (Composite Mode = SoftLight) ---> Output
____________ L---> CorrectorNode2 (LUT) ---> LayerMixer1

Thanks, it's always good to know what the expected input is - not all logs are created equal ;)
