PostFri Jul 01, 2022 12:54 pm

Hi everyone,

H.264 High SDI
H.264 High
H.264 Medium
H.264 Low

H.265 High SDI
H.265 High

You’ll probably want to specify a frame rate and resolution.

Good Luck

I know that on a 1TB drive in 2160P50 i can record 30 hours of 4K in H265 SDI

I did do some tests at 60fps at one point, in case these are useful. I'd imagine the 50fps bitrates would be similar, but perhaps 15% lower.
  • 1080p60 H.264 Low: 20 Mbps
  • 1080p60 H.264 Medium: 32 to 40 Mbps
  • 1080p60 H.264 High: 40 to 60 Mbps
  • 1080p60 H.264 SDI: 40 to 60 Mbps
  • 2160p60 H.265 Low: 32 to 36 Mbps
  • 2160p60 H.265 Medium: 60 to 85 Mbps
  • 2160p60 H.265 High: 70 to 100 Mbps
  • 2160p60 H.265 SDI: 75 to 120 Mbps
Note that other than the Low quality settings, which seemed to produce a files with a fairly consistent bitrate, for most of the other quality levels the bitrate seemed to vary somewhat depending on the content. So simpler and more static video content was toward the lower end of the range and more dynamic and complex video content was at the upper end.

I didn't test a ton of different videos though so this should just be taken as a rough range, it's possible that some other content could yield different results.

The 1080p H.264 numbers seem roughly in-line with the HyperDeck quality settings on the ATEM Mini Pro/Extreme (which presumably have fairly similar H.264 encoding engines). The ATEM Mini encoding bitrates have been documented elsewhere as:

HyperDeck High: 45 to 70 Mb/s
HyperDeck Medium: 25 to 45 Mb/s
HyperDeck Low: 12 to 20 Mb/s

One other thing that was a bit surprising to me was that at 1080p the H.264 SDI setting didn't increase the bitrate any over H.264 High. I would have expected a bit of a bump since H.264 High is 8-bit 4:2:0 while H.264 SDI is 10-bit 4:2:2. But at least for the videos I tested there wasn't much bitrate difference (in contrast, the 10-bit 4:2:2 2160p H.265 SDI setting did bump the bitrate slightly over the 10-bit 4:2:0 2160p H.265 High setting).

It would be nice if they let you explicitly choose between H.264 and H.265 regardless of resolution, but that doesn't seem to be possible with the current firmware.
