Can one convert CDNG to BRAW?

PostMon Jun 27, 2022 8:09 am

Hi

I'm wondering if one can convert CDNG to BRAW in some way for archiving unedited footage? I mean CDNG from e.g. BMPCC OG or Sigma fp.

Thanks in advance

I'd suggest EXR, for space use RGB half with mild compression, that will be enough. Since it's part of the ACES specs, it should be most future proof.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

To add to Uli’s suggestion, exr compression schemas are either mathematically lossless (zip1, zip16, PIZ, RLE) or visually lossless (DWAA, DWAB). And then some very specific methods meant for cg renders with lots of smooth gradients (pxr24) and methods ones no-one uses (B44, B44A).

If you want smaller files with some lossy compression use either DWA variant and test which compression level is reasonable for your case. Default level is visually lossless so if you need a good ballpark you don’t have to change it.

ACES specs define half float exrs with ACES2065-1 colorspace and no compression as a standard. Any compression is non-standard ACES container but it doesn’t really mean much in practice.

Trust me you're better off keeping it as CDNG. If you're worried about drive space, get yourself this: https://www.slimraw.com

I want Blackmagic to make a converter for it. I can't use BRAW on my Production 4K, so at least let me convert to BRAW.

even though BRAW is not a 100% RAW format, there is no way to re-interpret
the sensor data necessary for RAW.

If it can be done in camera it can be done outside camera. I see the ”its impossible” statement floating around a lot but no-one can actually tell what makes it impossible. Sensor profiling and some custom per-camera data? Well, just create a ”reference profile” and use that, same camera models are not so wildly different it is impossible to generalize them to off-camera profile.

Braw conversion is already available on a couple dozen cameras via the Video Assist so the impossible argument holds zero weight.

Good Luck

Blackmagic made it in camera, they can make a converter or in Resolve.
