[FIXED] media page keyboard focus wrong in Cinema Viewer

PostThu Jul 07, 2022 6:04 am

STEPS
open a project with a few clips
go to the media page
click on the first clip in the clip list
press down arrow
RESULT
the selection moves to the second clip (as expected)

Go into Cinema Viewer (ie fullscreen) Workspace/Viewer Mode/Cinema Viewer
press up arrow
RESULT
nothing happens (or the display goes to the first frame of the clip)

press down arrow
RESULT
the display goes to the last frame of the clip

EXPECT
the previous and next clips to be displayed

Note: pressing shortcuts that switch between areas of the media page has no effect. I'd expect them to work.

When you shift focus to the cinema viewer the up & down arrows are now the viewer controls. It's exactly the same as switching to the viewer in the Media page and then using the arrows. It's how it's designed, not a bug.

OK then it’s a feature request.
Let me do everything I can from the keyboard regardless of if I’ve full screened the video feed.

This is a lovely feature that FCP7 had that let me work on a laptop without missing my large monitor.

When I CMD-F on the Edit page and then use the up/down arrows, the playhead jumps from clip to clip. I guess I'm not understanding the specifics here. I agree that in full screen mode we should have access to the same timeline navigation controls (or at least those that make sense in full screen).

Add - OK - I get it - it's in the media page when moving through clips in the media pool. Right - that doesn't work in full screen. Too bad. A shortcut would be nice.

media page keyboard focus wrong in Cinema Viewer

PostThu Jul 07, 2022 6:25 pm

What I’m suggesting is to treat Cinema Viewer as a display mode rather than a separate panel.

Keyboard shortcuts don’t require me to see what I’m doing. So if I’m conversant enough with the editor I can run the whole thing without seeing the UI. That includes switching panels, going to the next clip in the clip list, loading it into the Viewer, and inserting parts into my edit.

I used to regularly run FCP 7 this way on my laptop.

I understand that Resolve isn’t FCP 7 but I don’t see any reason that Resolve needs to force me to leave Cinema Viewer mode if I know Resolve’s shortcuts well enough to get my work done without having to see the UI to do it.

If this poses a usability challenge for novice users - I don’t think it did in FCP 7 but Resolve is different so it might - I would ask for a setting that decides whether the full app or just the Viewer controls are available when in Cinema Viewer mode.

Maybe BMD isn't interested in this because they also sell the I/O hardware that would let you have a hero display running at the same time and that would let you see the large image while editing. I don't know if this is the case, just thinking out loud. I agree that it should be possible to continue editing or browsing media when you have the full screen mode, though.

Yeah - a hero display is nice when you’re in a facility or even at home. Not so when you’re trying to work portably on a laptop.

Plus I THINK they’re targeting “the masses” now with Resolve so this is counter to their mission.

Joe, this does work in the Media page if you use two monitors and the Clean Feed option. This applies to either media storage locations or bins.
I realise this is not a solution for single screen or free version users, but at least the facility exists.

Yes Charles - but I’m specifically talking about the Cinema Viewer - which is the software alternative to having an additional monitor.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

This is one of those cases where a change would ruin my current workflow.
I actually prefer the Cinema Viewer controls to be active when using the Cinema Viewer.
I have never liked software that has a hidden panel actively mapped to the keyboard, while using a different panel.

So for you you’d want the setting.
Which seems fine to me.

Can you enlighten me as to what shortcuts are different between the Cinema Viewer and timeline?

I don't understand the question. I just want Cinema Viewer controls to be active when the Cinema Viewer is the active panel. Timeline shortcuts are not relevant to this.
