After update 17.4.5 unsupported codec format on mainconcpet

PostMon Mar 07, 2022 10:40 am

Hello all!
I updated the latest studio version to 17.4.5 on osx catalina. After the update the mainconcept plugin stopped working with unsupported codec format error message. I tried to reinstall the plugin but it not working. I downgrade to 17.4.4 and the plugin works again.

Same here with Voukoder plugin.
"Rendering Error. Unsupported Codec and Format"
Happens with all codec selections from Voukoder.

No problems with DR 17.4.4

Hi,

There was unfortunately a regression in our 17.4.5 release that broke 3rd party codec plugins. We are aware of the issue and will address this in our next update.

Until then, if you need to use codec plugins, please use a prior version of Resolve.

Regards,
Vivek

Off topic - what's the advantage if there is any of using mainconcept plugin when rendering project in H264 or H265 - better quality?

You can getter similar or even better results by using HandBrake, but MainConcept is better than DR's own.
The main advantage for professionals are the standardised broadcast codecs in MC.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see you were on Mac before now.

No need to pay for mainconcepts plugin if you just want high quality h264 and h264 exports. Use Voukoder instead. It's free, very stable, and gives excellent results.

The advantage is of course that you save a lot of time in the long run when you don't have to render twice (DR first, the handbrake).

I have been unable to maintain the same quality with Handbrake on HVENC, the files are way smaller and the render is much faster but the quality is bad even with everything set to the slowest render and highest quality.
Main Concepts looks equal to the DR render but they don't use gpu hardware acceleration so the files are larger and the render time is 2X longer than DR.

If Handbrake was generating much smaller files, your setting was too low. Don't change the speed, even Fast is normally fine.
Go for Constant Quality and experiment with the RF setting. Lower numbers generate larger files and better quality. 16 should be visually lossless and 21-22 should still be looking good.
