Media won’t import

PostMon Aug 08, 2022 1:04 am

Hello everyone,
I just bought a new almost fully spec’d out 16” MacBook Pro M1 max and just installed DR 18. But when I try to import my .MOV or .MP4 files nothing happens. I try to select files and hit open or try dragging them into the media pane but neither works. What needs to be done to import my files?

Go to the Media tab, select your files in the upper left window and then pull them down into the Media Pool.
And if that works, cover some of the free training by BM:

I can't seem to find any of my media through the media tab. I see it all when I right click in the media pane when I am in the edit tab though but it just won't come over.

Can you post a test clip to a cloud service?

Media that isn't supported in Resolve won't show up in the Media Storage panel, so...

C'mon, Jim, that's not really helpful.
His machine is a new Mac. It should be able to play any kind of video that DR supports, in the MP4 or MOV container anyway.

@John, did you ever send a video to somebody else? If so, what did you use?

Have you tried dragging the media from the Finder into Resolve? If you’re in the Edit page you can drag Media to the files and folders section on the left.

It's the only explanation I'm aware of for files that don't show up in the Media Storage panel.

Even if the video codec is not compatible with DR free, he should get audio imported for MP4 and MOV.
I assume an installation gone wrong or user error.

Hey John,

You are not alone.
I also just got a new 16" Macbook Pro M1 Max, and could not import any files (supposedly supported by Resolve 18 like MP4, MP3, ...) by whichever methods-drag/drop, click-to-open into Media Pool, Edit Page, Timeline, etc.

Very frustrating to say the least.

Also, PNG (image file) could not be imported into Resolve version 18 nor 18.0.1.
And both of these 2 versions were downloaded directly from the Black Magic website, not from Apple Store.

So what I have discovered is that you can't directly import out of the photos app and there is no directory of the individual files in the photos app so the workaround is to export each clip to a separate folder on the desktop or where ever and then I am able to import either way into DR.

Media won’t import

PostWed Aug 10, 2022 3:08 am

Glad you found the issue and a workaround.
To me this is Apple’s issue in that they do kind of present the photo library in the Finder but don’t make the normal open/close/read/write interface work for them.

I’ve run into this in other programs as well. But since it’s a workflow many consumer users may try, BMD might want to recognize it and make it work.

Also- would you try and add [solved] to the start of the Subject for this thread?

Thanks for telling us what you found. I never use that Photo app, so I was looking in the wrong direction.

So my analysis was correct.

If you can't see the files in the Media Storage panel, it's because Resolve can't work with those files.

Why it couldn't was the mystery we'd never have guessed.

Jim - I’d say your reply was correct but, in its very terse form, was not very helpful.

You know a lot about Resolve and I bet you could have made some suggestions for how the OP might debug his situation.

Re: Media won’t import "RESOLVED"

PostWed Aug 10, 2022 10:12 pm

Hi John,

Yes, it does work.
In my case, Resolve won't import directly from 'Download'.
'Documents, Recent, and Movies' will allow import if you wait a bit after selecting the footage/file and then click 'OPEN'.
But the "drag & drop" method definitely won't work anywhere. Maybe this only happens in Resolve 18 or after.

Thank you very much for your discovery.
It allows the workflow to continue moving forward.

Guys,
I have a friend with the same issue over here.
He shot something in BRAW and the media is an external drive. He can see the files in Finder but Resolve won't "see" those files on the place hes trying to import from the Import Media menu.
I asked him to try the drag and drop from Finder to the Master folder in Resolve, and altough Resolve shows an "+" in the Master folder while he tries to drop there, files won't go.
Based on what I read above so far I guess it might be an Ownership/Permissions related issue.
I will ask him to go "Get Info - unlock the folder - give all users Read and Write permission" on that external drive and see if it works.
I hope it helps anyone.

Cheers

Macbook Pro M1 Max, DR version 18.04 - I'm having the same issue. Earlier today it was accepting ALL the files I'm working with (or was trying to work with rather). I was editing and colour grading them, no problem. Three .mkv files that are definitely on the compatible list, in total about 30GB. But then DR crashed all of a sudden. I had to start from scratch but now it's not recognising the same files! It's like you describe above, it just doesn't see them. There is the blue cross but once I try to add them to the Media Pool nothing happens, nada, zip. No matter what I've tried it's not working. We are talking about a complete turnaround in just a few minutes. Perhaps it's a bug with the M1 Max Mac, I don't know but what I do know is that it's more than frustrating. Have tried all suggested solutions above, changed Media Pool folder (all public access, i.e. no restrictions), etc, etc.

Has anyone found a solution to this pain in the you-know-what error?

Re: Media won’t import

I'm on the most recent version of macOS.

All of a sudden, I couldn't import media from the exact same location I had been importing from on an external hard disk.

I did some tests and found that for some reason, DaVinci decided it would only accept media imported from the Documents folder.

I tried enabling full disk access but that didn't work. The same files stored on my Ninja drive where the majority of the content I've been using actually lives, will not import anymore whereas they will if done so from the Documents folder.

I even tried adding the Ninja drive as a media storage folder in the project settings, but that didn't seem to work either.

I hope that this can be explained because it's seriously interfering with my workflow.

Seems to be an issue with Sonoma. Could it be that you first need to give full rights to the disk and restart the system? I'm only speculating, since I don't experience that under Monterey.
At the bottom of the Info field you can switch to 'ignore ownership on this volume'.

It seems to be working again. Maybe it's because I restarted. I don't know... But thanks for the response.

Did anyone find a solution? I am also having this problem with Resolve 18.6.5 on M1 max running Sonoma. To give you an example: I opened a project, dragged a few files from a location in my T7 SSD, which worked fine, but then as i tried importing more from the same location it stopped working and all the new medias appeared offline. Now even through drag and drop or the media tab the files just dont show up...
