Broadcast graphics software

PostFri Aug 12, 2022 8:27 pm

I am curious as to what software you use for your live graphics (lower thirds, opener, etc.). Currently we use NewBlue Titler Live 4k, its not that great and is very slow and extremely single threaded, standard things like undo rarely work if at all. Fusion makes it look like it does live graphics on the product page, but I doubt it works like Titler live or GenCG.

I just discovered Maestro from Avid seems good. I wish Blackmagic would make a broadcast character generator software, they make all the hardware.

We use Titler Live Broadcast. It's very fast on an M1 Pro.

I have a friend that swears by VMix and says their graphics works great too!

Why is it slow? What hardware are you running it on?

Best,

David

Yeah its the same software.
Its running on a AMD Threadripper 16core with a 1080ti, and 4k extreme 12g (key and fill), i'd list more, but it more than enough. When you look at the task manager you can see that it only utilizes one core when rendering a new lower third, for the most part. If they just made it multi-threaded and have proper undo functions and not get hosed up when changing tabs full of pictures and lowers, it would be great.

Isn't Vmix a OBS type software? I didn't know you could use it as Character Generator with key and fill SDI out.

I have, but it's a little complex and feels more like a backend to a good Character Generator, it really needs a more straight forward front end UI. It would be fine if it were just me, but we work and teach anyone in the public who wants to learn (public access station).

I've done a bunch of esports stuff using vMix for graphics and replays, and it worked well.

vMix all the way for us. Easy to use, on-board text generator, plenty of overlays and moves.

We use a separate vMix laptop to create live graphics and edit video clips, then simply use vMix NDI to bring them up on the main vMix desktop PC.

It has a great built in titler and its free!!!

vMix is a video switcher like OBS, but much more powerful, and in many respects much more powerful than ATEM's. I have been running vMix for years and have reluctantly moved over to ATEM's. The problem with vMix is having the right hardware to run it on without overloading anything. I was at the point where I had to upgrade and spread the load around different devices to increase reliability, but I still keep vMix running for the graphics and all the other non-camera inputs that the ATEM has trouble with.

One of my favourite features in titling is the ability to draw the title data from a spreadsheet. One of my regular gigs is a business networking group and they have 20 - 40 businesses that introduce themselves. I setup 1 title in vMix that references a spreadsheet. I copy the registration list into this spreadsheet in my format, and during the gig we just tell the title which line on the spreadsheet to get the person's name and business from as each person stands up. Very powerful and very flexible.

I generally bring the titles in as a Luma key, but if you have something like a Decklink, you can use two channels to output the key and fill. vMix understands alpha channels.

I like both vMix and ATEM's and wish there was a way to combine both together.

By way of example, this is our main vMix PC
Alienware Aurora R12 Core i9 Desktop
32GB RAM
Blackmagic Decklink 8K Pro card (4 x SDI inputs)
Elgato Cam Link Pro card (4 x HDMI inputs).
GeForce RTX3070 graphics card

Running 1080p50 with 8 inputs plus videos and 4-5 x NDI channels, it runs happily all day at around 45-55% CPU.

We ran the graphics out over a DeckLink as key and fill, and set those inputs as sources for the keyers. It works very well that way.

Hey Nick - I'd check out the Titler Live Facebook Group. Maybe someone there can help you get what you have running smoother.

We have used Ross Xpression. But it is pricey and requires an equally pricey operator.
