Audio file has 14 channels and takes up 14 tracks

PostFri Jan 20, 2023 6:20 am

Hi everyone. Today I started editing another YouTubers video and he sent me the video files and the audio files. The Audio files are .WAV files and they consist of 14 channels, and when I drag them on the timeline it takes 14 tracks. The last like 11 is empty with the first 2 being loud and clear and the 3rd one being a very quiet version of the 2 above.

Long story short how can I convert this (preverbally on big scale so I can do this conversion automatically when batch editing them) to a file with 1 stereo channel taking up only 1 track in the timeline?

Thanks everyone

You can unlink the multichannel file and then delete the channels you're not interested in in Fairlight.

You might take a look at this video tutorial I made about multichannel WAVs in Resolve:

Since you only need the first two channels of audio, you can use the clip attributes > audio tab to change the audio channels to a single stereo channel using embedded clips 1 and 2 and delete all the other channels. Do this before you use these clips in a timeline or elsewhere (i.e., before you link them to a video file). Joe's tutorial is also very good - he shows the case where you actually want access to many of those extra channels and yet want to be able to edit only a single (adaptive) audio channel.

I would go the Clip Attributes route mentioned by Steve above. You can do this to all clips at once before editing even begins, making it very efficient.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks everyone for the replies and help! I just feel it's not very efficient to sit and delete 12 channels for every audio clip, luckily it's only going to be a few for every YouTube video I edit.

You can edit the attributes of multiple clips at the same time (just multi-select and then right-click on one of them and select 'clip attributes'. Provided they all have the same 14 audio channel composition, this should work.

You don't need to do that clip by clip. Just select all clips and do it for all at once by going into clip attributes.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Agreed. That's why we edit Clip Attributes before editing begins. ;)
