A7sIII footage has weird colors and artifacts

PostWed Mar 22, 2023 6:54 pm

Hello,

I am trying to import A7siii footage into my timeline and it has glitchy weird artifacts and colors, especially at the beginning on clips, but inside the clips as well.

See attached photos...

If you try to transcode to prores?
Sometimes h264/5 give you some weirdness.

Do you mean I can't import standard Sony A7sii footage into Resolve? Premiere imports it great. H265 isn't rocket science. I was wanting to purchase studio version, but if Resolve can't handle standard footage, maybe I shouldn't

Yes, its AMD Ryzen 4000 Series, Nvidia GEFORCE GTX. Lenova Gaming Laptop.

Please help!!

I tried the Studio version and this does not occur with the studio version. It seems that the studio version uses the Nvidia card (I am guessing that is the reason.)

Any help in getting it to work on the free version as we may use both free and paid for.

This is occuring on the Free version, but not the Paid for version. Seems to be an issue with the AMD / Software Graphics vs. Nvidia GPU.

Re-reading your last message, I see you are using free Resolve. Free Resolve on Windows does not support 10 bit H.265 files. You need the Studio version for that.

But you can switch the camera to H.264, loosing some of the possible quality.
Apart from that, Sony is giving you a clear warning that you need the right environment when you try to switch to HEVC. They are not kidding and it relates to post.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

As Dwaine said, Black Magic has undocumented limitation of not supporting 10 bit H265 in Free on Windows.

I have had ticket open for 6 months to try and get them fix the documentation,

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=166300&hilit=+documentation

But this usually results in no footage at all being shown only audio. I have not seen others report corrupted video.

Are you seeing the corruption in the preview or only on export? H.264/265 export has never really worked well in Resolve (they do nothing more than barely mention it in the 3000 page manual). I recommend avoiding it and using DNxHR HQ, then transcoding to H264/5 with a tool that actually has support like handbrake.

With the right hardware, it works surprisingly well. I have supported the recommendation of transcoding for years. But on Apple silicon you can work will all flavours of H.264/265 as if it were ProRes. I can only say I'm impressed (we got a Sony A7 IV).
I had no chance yet to try with recent Intel iGPUs.

The corruption is shown in the preview of the timeline and the final export.

I can't remember exactly what the footage was recorded as. Is there an easy way to tell?

Would be useful for the Free version to support this. I am talking with the support teem and see if they can fix this.

Also would be useful if thee Free and Paid for versions could be installed at the same time, If my wife is using the paid for version on her laptop that would enable me to use the free version. At the moment there is a likelihood we might both use the same paid for version at the same time.

That said, its refreshing to get some support from the company (trying to move over from Premiere).

1) Mediainfo can tell you all the relevant specifications of what is in the file

2) You do know that you can have 2 computers running at the same time with 1 studio licence, right?

Thanks Mads for the information.

Nice to have support here. Feels different from Adobe for sure... :-)

One $300 key is good for concurrent installs on two machines

I have uploaded a few clips for you to narrow down the issue. The codec and format is in the titles.
