Is video clean feed known to cause crashes?

PostFri Mar 24, 2023 6:10 pm

I ask because I notice almost every time davinci crashes for me it's when I have video clean feed turned on. Is this a know issue? And is so, what are the possible ways to fix the situation?

My laptop is the Lenovo 5i Pro, 12th gen intel, RTX 3060, NVIDIA studio drivers.

I've never had it cause a crash.

I use clean feed on my 3rd monitor every day and have never had a problem with it.

Clean Feed increases the strain on the GPU and playback generally, so it's conceivable that, particularly on a laptop, it's one demand too many.

Ok thanks for the replies. At least now I know it's probably not a bug in Davinci. I just updated my drivers to see if that will help and I'll keep a better mental log of when the crashes happen exactly. Often it also happens on the color page - adjusting color when watching the clean feed.

A particularity of this type of crash also is that I'm not able to open the task manager to quit Davinci (Win11). Only signing out and back in works to get back to an unfrozen state.

collect the logs right after a crash so we can see if there a pattern....

Today during one of these crashes Resolve spat out this error code:

The GPU failed to perform image processing because of an error
Errorcode 702

Does that error message pinpoint the kind of problem that causes the crashes and maybe also a possible solution?

I just learned how to export the log so next time it crashes I will export the log as well.

P.S. The crash pretty much always happens when I'm in clean feed mode and adjusting an exposure dial in the HDR panel. Maybe someone can try to do the same to see if the crash is reproducable across systems? For me usually after a few minutes of doing the above it crashes.

Which kind of materials are you working on?
4k h265?

5.3K h265 GoPro 11 footage, I generated proxies for all my footage though, in quarter resolution and h264 format, the latter to save HD space and it's easier to play back than h265.

I am on a Lenovo i7 with RTX5000 using clean feed on my 3rd screen all day without issues.
However, using h264 proxies isn't the best choice, try DNxHD instead. This might not solve your problem but gives you smoother editing, even with higher resolutions.
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.

Yes I will try that soon. I opted for 264 proxies to save space as DNxHD takes up a lot of space and I generated proxies for about 8 hours of footage recently.

DNxHD would have eaten up too much space for that. But I may re-generate proxies to DNxHD for an hour of footage at the time soon to see if that resolves this issue I'm having.

Laptop, 3060, i7 11800h. studio drives.

My laptop came stock with 16 gb of ram. After upgrading to 18, I was affected by crashes, to the point where I stopped using video clean feed. It only crashes during color correction, which sucks, because my coloring monitor is smaller than my interface monitor.

I updated my ram to 32 gb, single channel to see if that would help, still crashed.

Finally got my second stick of 32 gb, low and behold, no crashes. I wish i just knew why it started crashing in the first place.

Ok thanks for chipping in with your experience, I'm still getting crashes. My Lenovo 5i pro came with 32GB RAM, not sure if that's one or 2 sticks, I can upgrade to 64GB though, I know that. Will consider that as an option now considering your experience.
